Baseball Takes Series Against Penn State

Submitted by Sac Fly on

The Wolverines finished up their 3 game series at Penn State with a big win. After being clubbed 11-1 in the opener, Michigan took game two 5-3 and finished off the series today with an 8-3 decision.

On the mound the Wolverine pitchers were great. Adcock was dealing going 6 innings, 2 hits and no earned runs. Vancena threw 1 2/3, 2 hits and one run.

Ogden got into a 9th inning jam facing 1st and 3rd with one out, but he got the 2nd out on a strikeout and finished the game with a groundout.

Another multi-error game has continued a rather unsettling trend and both runs from PSU came unearned from errors, one fielding the other a wild pitch.

At the plate Glines went 2-for-5, Bruder 2-for-5 but Travis Maezes broke the game open in the 7th. Leading 3-2 he went deep into the left field corner to score one, scored on a fielding error and doubled again in the inning to stretch the lead to 8-2. He finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

The Wolverines improve to 21-14 overall and 6-6 in the Big Ten.

Up next: Tuesday vs Michigan State at Comerica Park

MSU is non-conference, since we weren't scheduled to play them as a conference opponent this year, I believe. That means the next two conference series are against Purdue and Minnesota - the two teams at the bottom of the conference.

That series win over Maryland is looking more impressive each week. Maryland is 24-9.

state actually has a few decent wins so the game on Tuesday should be interesting. Sadly for those who can't attend, the game isn't even televised. They can't get BTN or FSN Plus to broadcast it?

It doesn't count in the B1G standings as it is a non-conference game.

Michigan scheduled them because the idiots at the B1G offices made the schedules so that Michigan wouldn't play state for two straight years. Didn't play them once last year.

Michigan doesn't even play OSU this year at all. This will be the third year in the last four years that Michigan and OSU do not meet in a B1G conference series and the second time in the last three years that they do not play PERIOD.

You get to play 8 conference series a year in both baseball and softball.

In baseball, they are rotating the schedule from 2015-2017 so that every team plays every other team 2 times in that 3-year rotation.

In softball, you play your 6 "division" opponents every year and 2 of the 7 cross-"division" opponents, even though softball doesn't actually have separate divisions when compiling the standings.

The result is that Michigan will play at Iowa once every 3 years in baseball and once every 7 years in softball.  On the other hand, Michigan will play at Rutgers once every 3 years in baseball but once every other year in softball.

Why the distinction?  No idea.  Unfortunately, it hurts the softball team's strength of schedule, because all of the best softball teams other than Michigan are in the western "division."  In baseball, the quality opposition is spread more evenly.

My wife wanted to go to the baseball game and out to dinner for her birthday.  I'm a lucky guy.

It was a beautiful day, a beautiful stadium, and about 80% of the seats were empty.  They are running a promotion coming up for $5 and a student ID you get in to the game and access to a unlimited buffet.  I don't know if it's a PSU thing, northern thing, or baseball just has no support.

It was really neat to see some of the players that were freshmen when I last took my son out there playing as seniors now.  The team seems to be in flux with no go-to guy at the moment but there is a few that I can see taking over that role as they mature.

I miss seeing Crank play.
