Associate Athlete Director Mike Stevenson to Retire

Not earth-shaking news as things have been going lately, but certainly worthy of an MGoTipofthehat for a lifetime of service to the University and Athletics.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan executive associate athletic director Mike Stevenson announced Tuesday (April 13) that he will start a phased retirement from the athletic department on July 1. He will begin a 50-percent appointment through Dec. 31, 2010, at which time he will fully retire from the university.

"I have had a wonderful 40-year career at the University of Michigan and feel honored and privileged to have served in this very special place," Stevenson said. "I will miss the people and the excitement, but after 40 years of service, it is time for me to step aside."

"I am very pleased that Mike has agreed to stay through December," said U-M Director of Athletics Dave Brandon. "This is stretching him six months beyond his originally planned retirement date and I am grateful for his willingness to give us a bit more time to transition his duties. Mike's knowledge, expertise and years of experience are invaluable."

Originally from Durand, Mich., Stevenson received his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University before attending the University of Minnesota, where he earned both his Master of Arts and doctorate in education.

He started his professional career at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., in 1965 as an instructor of physical education while coaching football, basketball and baseball. In the following years, Stevenson had stints with the University of Minnesota and University of Hawaii, directing intramural and recreational sports.

He came to the University of Michigan in 1970. In 1975, he was named an associate athletics director and head of the department of recreational sports at U-M. In that capacity, he served multiple roles for both the athletic department and university itself, handling everything from teaching, overseeing both Radrick Farms and the U-M Golf Course and serving as interim women's athletic director.

His oversight of the athletic department facility expansion will likely be his lasting legacy, overseeing the building and renovation of almost every capital project in the last 30 years. Included among those projects are the Stephen M. Ross Academic Center, the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex and the Michigan Stadium renovation.

Stevenson and his wife Vernee have two children, Andrea and Scott, and a daughter-in-law, Katherine.

Stevenson is a really, really interesting guy. A very interesting conversation to say the least when you get to talk to him. One of those guys that just oozes Michigan in a very institutional way. Incredibly smart and very good at what he did.

I will say this, though: one of the most unintentionally hilarious experiences of my life was sitting in a conference room at Yost during the winter of 2004-5 listening to Dr. Stevenson awkwardly talk about eliminating the "c-sucker chant", as he called it, from the student section repertoire. Hearing someone with a PhD say "c-sucker" (not the full word, that exact abbreviation) was just too much after a while.

I've always wondered how the discussions went between Bill Martin and other AD personnel while trying to eliminate the vulgar chants at Yost.

I don't know about that, but Stevenson was the point person between the AD and the student section on that problem that particular season. They held several open meetings for student season ticket holders. It ended up being pretty awesome.

This one in particular, they took us up to the conference room (now that I think about it, it was at Schembechler Hall, not Yost), gave us dinner, talked to us a bit. Then there were supposed to be players who were going to show up, but they had a team thing that night, so instead they took us across to Yost to take a tour of the locker room and team areas.

Now THAT was even better than Stevenson talking about the "c-sucker" chant for an hour over free pizza. The lounge with leather couches, NCAA championship trophies, and Morrison's Hobey Baker was pretty unbelievable.

Mike Stevenson is the consummate professional.

When I heard that they were replacing the Oosterbaan astroturf back in '01, I went to him with the outlandish idea that I wanted to see if they could cut me off a piece to use as "carpet" for my dorm room. He was more than accommodating, asking for the desired dimensions we needed and even giving us the '4' from the 40 yard line as part of our piece.

Hopefully he has a happy phased-in retirement...and if he needs some turf for a dorm-sized room in his house, he knows who to call.

If any of you worked in the IM sports department, you need to thank Mike Stevenson. I was a sports supervisor for IM's for 5 of 6 years I was at UM and Mike was always kind of like the Wizard of Oz-- you didn't see him much, but you knew who he was and he made the stuff happen. He kept the place running and funded, and always made sure the actual IM department had advocacy with big AthDept officials. Between him and Robert Fox (who I still swear is actually Craig T Nelson), the IM department was run as well as any in the country for the number of sports and opportunities they offered. After Mike got the promotion within the AthDept, he still made sure the IM program had a voice in the big offices.

Thanks Mike

"So I come out of Ohio Stadium after we beat the Buckeyes, and right there on the hood of my friend's car, some one took a dump, in the shape of an 'O'. no shit. Oh, sorry, bad pun."
