Anyone Excited about the New Radio Team?

Submitted by alum96 on

Since the announcement this winter really have not heard much talk about the new radio team.  Based on the TV crew I'd really like to listen to the radio if not for the delay between the TV and radio - will probably still give them the controls for the first drive just to see how they sound together.  Will be an interesting experiment having 2 color guys side by side with 1 trying be play by play.  Anyone else at least intrigued?

As an aside listening to 97.1 this morning on and off, and I am surprised how little fan interaction from the UM football side.  Caputo is trying to stir up some college football talk and almost all the callers are Tigers centric.  A bit disappointed - maybe the general fanbase is just beat down.

Definitely not Sparty cheerleaders.   With Karsch on the sidelines.

[EDIT: I'm reading the comments below, so I guess I have to use caps:  IT'S STREAMED LIVE ON MGOBLUE.COM!!!!  IT HAS BEEN FOR YEARS!!! ]

So, yes.  I'm excited about them.  Yes, I enjoyed their broadcast.  More than any of the TV college guys who probably wouldn't know a Devin from a Devin.

There is delay, but I'm not watching TV so it's not a problem for me.  (Apparently there's no delay to listen at the game.)

I wanted to listen to it online, I'm getting non stop commercials. Not really a question but will it start at kickoff? I'm using the wtka website.

All I was getting on wtka.com was non-stop commercials, as well.  It's not the first time I've had this happen with their web streaming.  Really annoying.  Went to mgoblue.com and got the stream to work just fine.

Internet broadcasts involve licensing
Over air (terrestrial) do too
It's not WTKAs fault they're only airing commercials on their stream
They're not allowed to stream the game
Same as 97.1s website/iTunes feed during Tigers
Thus
All the "F WTKA" posts are dumb

I absolutely cannot stand ppl who jump to conclusions and blame when they don't understand something. People literally threatened to "remember this" bc they felt wtka lied to them. This poster blasted wtka for airing commercials instead of accepting they couldn't do differently, then blasted me bc he didn't read properly

That's fine if they don't have the licensing rights to broadcast online, but they shouldn't advertise "listen live" on their site if they're not carrying the game.  That is what leads to the frustration of listeners who are getting only commercials.

You won't find any station that has a web team swap out a diff image during every licensed broadcast. That's a lot of work for 3 hrs a week. Every tigers affiliate has the same, as well as nfl affiliates etc

I only got pissy because so many people implied it was wtka being an asshole

Geaux_Blue is right.   This is the way it has pretty much ALWAYS been.  Local stations have a "Listen Now" button for their stations that is always there, but they don't have licensing rights to broadcast major sporting events (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL College Sports) so when you click on the link during broadcasts of those games, you hear nothing but commercials.  It has been that way for many, many years, probably at least a decade.

This is not something new or surprising.

So far I love these guys. Brandy could be a little more specific on the some of the plays in terms of identifying players, and reporting gained yardage on some plays. But he'll get the hang of it.

when I was a kid living in California it took me years to be a Michigan fan I remember hearing Dan on MNF and he was one of my favorites. I'll take this weekly over Espn, NBC next week especially.

The lead announcer woman kept stumbling over her words.  The color guy was a complete fool and probably even worse than the announcer.  Between the two of them, the only thing they wanted to talk about was Garnder pointing out the MIKE linebacker on every play, as if that was the only interesting thing that was ever happening.  They were brutal.

They were like the Z team of announcers.  You could have picked two drunk bums off the street and it wouldn't have been much worse.

Most TV feeds are delayed due to signal transmission times.  Depending on what you are watching (cable, satellite) the delay might be short or it can be long, like 7-10 seconds,  Most people don't realize this. Trying to sync up with a radio broadcast can be really tricky.  You have to figure out a way to delay the radio feed.  It can be done, but it isn't trivial to do so.

If you are runing the radio feed through a more expensive amplifier, they usually have delay functionality built in that you can enable, but it might not allow you to set it up that high.

Switched to the radio broadcast half way through (new streaming on the phone is solid). The espn announcers were insufferably bad.

The new radio team I thought was quite good! Brandstatter's play by play could use a little work. He got caught chatting a number of times and didn't give a very good call. Outside of those he was decent.

I think you guys are letting your hearts (as Brandy seems like a great guy and bleeds maize & blue) get ahead of your ears.

I listened to a little more than one quarter, so perhaps he was lights out the rest of the game, but in that short time I heard him misidentify names, numbers, and yardage, and he was hesitant more than once. Additionally, on the highlights after the game, he pulled "He could go all the way!" for both Smith and Green's long runs (which is not a huge deal, but since they both got tackled well before the 10 yard line, they really weren't that close) and more importantly, he called Smith's TD (after the long run) for Green.

I like the rapport with Dierdorf, but I hope Brandy will get a lot better (which he certainly should, but you never know). I mean, on commercials I switched over to the WMU-Purdue game and their broadcast team sounded more prepared/professional.
