Another 2010 DT off the board - Jay Guy to Cal (?)

Submitted by anthem_1 on
i hate you angry michigan DT recruiting god. he was a high(ish) level player that reportedly had UM near the top of his list. hopefully, he's a soft-commit and will still take some visits and we can get him on campus. if not - seems like it is going to be another struggle to get some depth at the DT spot AGAIN. yes, i know - too early to start worrying about a class that will sign LOI's 350+ days from now, but guy was one of the upper level DT's that was giving UM a mention. and, uhhh, what the hell else are we supposed to do around here? - discuss the economy? no, the whims of 17 yr olds is a lot more interesting to me. makes about as much sense too. edit - link http://cal.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=914751

I hope he makes a visit, because, although I can understand wanting to go to Berkeley (even as a life-long Michigan fan, I drooled a little at the thought of going there when I was looking at schools) because I think the campus could be a big selling point. I know we're not Cali, but I think Ann Arbor has a lot more to offer than people would think from a Michigan city. I mean, I grew up in Michigan so maybe it's just my observation that Ann Arbor is different than any other town in the state, but I would guess that someone from way out of state wouldn't expect what's in store in AA. And, if he has a commitment to academics we're obviously going to be at least attractive to him. Of course this all depends on how solid his commitment is. And in RonVH's interview he said he wasn't going to commit until fall so maybe it's really soft!!!!!!!!!11!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!

Berkeley? Let's see here - would you rather go to a school that has so much tradition they don't even have enough pages in the presser to write it all down or a school most famous for having people camp out in trees to prevent the school from building a new student athletic center? Decisions decisions...

I love Michigan, but Berkeley is beautiful. The school is top notch. The campus is AMAZING. I am from Michigan and biased, but if I was from another state that would be a very long decision for me. Have you ever been there? It really is a great place to be.

I repeat, Football. This kid isn't going for an academic degree or going because it's pretty. Big time college recruits go to schools because they all want to, ultimately, end up in the NFL. They aren't like you and I and trying to figure out which place has the better degree and all of that - they go to school so they can play football and hopefully make it to the NFL. That's all there is to it and when you look at it from that perspective I have no idea why someone would pick Cal over Michigan when you're from Texas (if you're from California or a nearby state there's the obvious hometown factor). I wouldn't fault any of you guys for going to Cal because it's pretty or because they have a better academic program but when you're talking football for an out of state kid it's a no brainer.

Getting to the NFL is not what makes a kid decide to go to a certain school. It's ONE FACTOR, but not the entire thing. If it were, then every great high school quarterback would choose to go to USC. Every good defensive lineman would choose Miami. Considering OSU's history of producing NFL quarterbacks, why would the best player from the class of 2008 pick OSU? Most of these kids feel like they can get to the next level no matter what. Whether they're playing for Michigan or Tulsa, they think they can succeed. When's the last time a great linebacker came out of Notre Dame? What's that you say? Never? Hm. I wonder why Manti Te'o decided to go there, then...

Opportunity to start as a freshman at a school that has every single game nationally televised perhaps? If every D-lineman went to the same school then only 4 of them would go to the NFL every year and on top of that there aren't enough scholarships to do that. You're right - it's not the only factor - another is playing time. I don't recall anybody making it to the NFL riding the bench for 4 years. And there we have the reason for parody - of course they all think they can make it but they realize that your chances are greater at some places than others. TP went to OSU because they are popular and liked his mobility - there were TONS of schools that expressed no interest in him at all (USC).

Everybody does know that. And yet he'd almost certainly be coming off the bench for the entirety of Campbell and Martin's careers. All I'm saying is that it's not as clear-cut of a decision as you're implying. There are all kinds of factors (friends, tradition, distance from home, relationship with coaches, chances to win a championship, playing time, etc.). It's not a "no brainer" to come to Michigan, especially after they just finished a 3-9 season.

Well that depends on what you want for your major. Like for mine (Mechanical Engineering) UM is ranked higher than Cal. And aesthetics are all in the eye of the beholder. If California was the be all end all state with nothing but awesomeness abound we'd never get anyone from that state.
