As for the transfers...

•  At QB, I think you find a unique situation...for example, someone who was a RS Freshman this year, thought he needed to wait one more year behind a senior (until after 2023) to start as a RS Sophomore. But this year he may have gotten recruited over by a true freshman.  So there was no real expectation to play in '23, JJ could leave after '23...and this kid would think he's in the mix to start in '24.  I'm not saying this exact situation, I'm saying FIND a situation.

(That also requires Admissions to let someone in who's not a grad transfer)

•  At LT, it's simple...if one of the OG's leaves early...you look at sliding Barnhart to that spot and bringing in a LT like we did Olu this year. If you can't find that bridge LT, you keep Barnhart at LT and El-Hadi takes the OG spot. IF BOTH OGs leave, you plug in Barnhart and El-Hadi and you HAVE to find a transfer LT.  Like Crippen this year, we have options who should be ready in '24...but not next year.

• We absolutely must get a grad transfer CB. Even if Turner returns. If DJ leaves, it needs to be a bonafide starter ala Olu Oluwatimi.  If Turner leaves, you go find the Jordan Addison or Jahmyr Gibbs of CBs and get him that NIL deal.

Hell, LB isn't good right now...figure out a way to rescue Kalen and Kobe King from PSU.

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^

Of course we do. But the fact that people are ignoring the contributions of Olu Oluwatimi and Eyabi Okie are mind blowing to me.

Are we not developing Crippen?

We brought in Okie and we already had Harrell, Upshaw, McGregor, Guy, and Moore who could've earned a spot opposite Morris.

Why are some of you so afraid of being good and having top talent?

This mentality that you earn your spot by simplying being around has to stop.

It was the same group whining about bringing Shea Patterson in. Gone are the days where you only field a successful team through recruiting.

You* all can't bitch about the recruiting class and then get all upset when someone suggests we need a transfer.

(*I'm not specifically talking to the person I've responded to...)

I think your transfer tackle solution is unlikely and unnecessary.

Unlikely: We seem to have trouble getting transfers and great lineman are rarer in the portal.

Unnecessary: Barnhart, El Hadi, Crippen, Atterberry are all proven or recieved some hype. We also have a bunch of guys with crazy potential building up behind those guys.

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 1:43 PM ^

Bullshit. What have ANY of those guys, minus Barnhart and maaaybe El-Hadi done to show that they can hang with the top 5 teams in the country.

Again, did you all not watch the Orange Bowl last year?

Stop with this bullshit where you're considering feelings and seniority and time put into the program.

Do I feel bad for Braiden McGregor? Sure. Do I feel better when Eyabi Okie is domininating an opposing OL? You bet your ass I do.

You don't beat Georgia, Bama, etc. with this mentality that so many of you have. I know it feels personal for a lot of people because NO ONE wants a transfer to come in over someone you've invested in and you wouldn't want it to happen to you. I get it.

But I ask again...did you watch the Orange Bowl?

If yes, miss me with the Atteberry, El-Hadi, Barnhart, Crippen, bullshit. Can that OL hold up against most teams? Heck yeah, that's 4/5 of a great starting OL in the B1G.

That line is getting DESTROYED by the elite programs and THAT is the measuring stick. That's the bar.

Don't lower you expectations for 9 wins and a chance at the rest. You should want the closest thing to All-Americans and 1st Round draft picks at EVERY position.

If that's changed, let me know. I didn't think we were playing for 9 wins and a participation trophy. When you look at that '18 Bama offense, that '19 LSU offense, last year's Georgia defense. That '20 Bama offense...how are we not aiming for that level?

Why are so many of you crying every Saturday whenever something remotely negative happens if that's not your standard?

Be consistent

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 1:48 PM ^

Persi is still a year away...just like Crippen this year, IMO.

We have seen absolutely NOTHING that says Persi would be ready to be a starting LT against a rush like Michigan has had the last two years.

Or Bama or Georgia last year.

Persi versus 9 out of 12 teams next year? Just fine.

But I'm sorry this program has elevated itself to the point where that's not good enough.

You saw the talent gap with Georgia last year. You see what Tennessee just did to Bama. You've seen the dynamic offenses that have won't national championships over the past 5 years.

'23 Persi wasn't on those teams.

I find it weird that everyone is fine with Olu Oluwatimi over Crippen this year, but so many are floored at the fact of a '23 Oluwatimi LT over Persi next year.

I think you're too pessimistic on the Oline and QB needing transfers. I dont they will need to. QB you have Davis Warren who almost assuredly will stay another year as the locked in backup. One play can cause JJ to go down and then Davis is the guy. I doubt he would find a better situation elsewhere especially as a unrecruited guy out of highschool.

And for Oline the worst case scenario is Keegan-Olu-Hayes and Zinter all leave. I don't think that would happen (I'd wager Zinter would come back for his 4th year).  But even if it does happen I think they'd be okay with a line of Persi/Barhnart - El Hadi - Crippen -Barnhart/someone - Jones. They have enough scholarship bodies in their 3rd or 4th year where they'd be okay.

I agree with you tho they need to find a corner without a doubt. Could be a very light spot outside of Will Johnson. Hopefully McBurrows lives up to the hype but the length of time out because of injury is highly concerning

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 1:51 PM ^

The QB backup is more about bodies.

Davis Warren can't be the only backup. He's legit.

It wasn't but so long ago that we were playing our 3rd and 4th string QB.

McNamara is out now.

I'm not saying JJ gets hurt, I'm saying you need a Davis Warren and an Alan Bowman (along with Cade and JJ).

Next year if you lose Cade and Bowman...you're going to need 2 guys to replace them. It's fair to assume Orji/Denegal can be one of the two (likely Orji).

You need someone else.

El-Hadi has already played quite a bit at guard this year and played well doing so. I’d imagine the staff is more than comfortable inserting him into the lineup at guard and allowing Barnhart to take the LT job next season if the situation arises where a guard declares for the draft.

I also wouldn’t count out the development of someone like Persi.

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 1:54 PM ^

I think El-Hadi is ready, the comment about LT is more about the fact that I think Barnhart is a better guard RT than a LT.

And I think Barnhart is a better OG than El-Hadi.

But El-Hadi is the reason why I didn't suggest a transfer OG if Keegan or Zinter left. Because he could slide right in there.

Where I think you can level up is sliding Barnhart to that open spot and getting someone better than Barnhart at LT. Then El-Hadi becomes the 6th OL, like Barnhart was until Jones got hurt.

Blueblood80

October 20th, 2022 at 9:20 PM ^

You believe All would come back?   Regardless of his injury, I kind of assumed he was still gone after this season.  He could have left after last.  That said, I sure wouldn’t complain if he was here next year!

MaizeBlueA2

October 20th, 2022 at 9:23 PM ^

I would've said ABSOLUTELY not. In fact, I had him as a lock.

But insiders on another board have reported that the plan is for him to miss this year and he plans to come back next year.

They were also the first to report he was out (even though Michigan hasn't said it and continues to list him as doubtful).

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^

He's a TE with a bad back who hasn't played most of the year. He's far from a lock.

He LOVES Harbaugh, I mean LOVES him. And for the record, Harbaugh loves him. Go back to when Harbaugh would mention his "favorites" in press conferences...All was consistently mentioned. He lights up when talking about Erick All.

Now someone mentioned the baby, that's a huge life changing event and maybe that changes everything. But I do know the plan was for him to sit and come back next year, which again, to me was shocking. When I first put this together before the season, Corum, All, Bell, Johnson, Smith and Turner were the 6 I had pegged for gone, no matter what.

All was poised to be a 2nd round type TE. If he is getting a 4-7 grade, who knows. But the insiders say his plan is to return, so I'll leave it until someone says otherwise.

October 20th, 2022 at 9:25 PM ^

I don't know, I think it's probably a *lock* that Ronnie Bell, DJ Turner, Mike Sainristil, and Mike Morris will be plying their wares in the NFL next season. Neither of them have anything to gain by returning for another year. It's clear that Bell can be a quality slot wr, Turner can be a good corner, Sainristil can cover the slot, and Morris can play the run and rush the passer in the NFL.

However, this was a fun exercise between watching the baseball game and the football game.

MaizeBlueA2

October 20th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^

I almost agree...the difference for me is, IMO, there is no realistic amount of money that brings Corum or Smith back.

If this was 2 years ago, those guys you mentioned? 100%.

But if someone gets Bell high six figures...maybe he considers coming back to play with little brother. Or Morris with his older sis on staff.

Sainristil has to go, but of all the guys, I've heard he LOVES college and LOVES Michigan.

If you asked for my opinion (which you didn't):

QB: Cade McNamara - LOCK (transfer)

RB: Blake Corum - LOCK (NFL)

RB: Leon Franklin - won't speculate (transfer)

WR: Cornelius Johnson - 50/50 (NFL) - before the season, I thought 75/25 gone because I've heard unlike Sainristil, he's here to win, but the NFL is a priority. Hasn't had the year so far and does he really want to leave to be a 5th round draft pick?

WR: Ronnie Bell - 75/25 gone (NFL)

WR: Cristian Dixon - won't speculate (transfer)

TE: Luke Schoonmaker - 75/25 gone (NFL) - just feel like you have to, especially if All is returning.

TE: Louis Hansen - won't speculate (transfer)

NT: Mazi Smith - LOCK (NFL)

EDGE: Mike Morris - 90/10 (NFL) - near LOCK

LB: Jaydon Hood - won't speculate (transfer)

OLB: Taylor Upshaw - 25/75 (Return) - he's a Michigan guy so I don't see a grad transfer to start somewhere else, he's a leader, I'd guess that he'd come back, get another degree and be a leader with Morris gone.

OLB: Joey Velasquez - ??? - I have no idea, does he focus on Baseball? His situation is weird...would love to see him back.

OLB: Tyler McLaurin - won't speculate (transfer)...does anyone find it weird that you never hear ANYTHING about him?

CB: DJ Turner - 80/20 (NFL) - all about his priorities. He could benefit from another year, but DBs seem to always leave a year too soon.

NB: Mike Sainristil - 75/25 (NFL) - he has to leave, but man, from every I've heard...he doesn't want to go. He loves Michigan and loves Harbaugh.

I could've (maybe should've) added Keegan, Zinter, and Okie.

Keegan and Zinter have more eligibility than you realize. Okie is a wildcard. I'll say 50/50 for Eyabi.

VintageRandy

October 20th, 2022 at 11:23 PM ^

You’re delusional if you think Corum or Okie would pass up the NFL for college NIL money. The whole point of the past decade of these young men’s lives has been to play football at the highest level, and if they get the chance to go they should! Corum has reached peak NFL potential this season, Okie is on his 5th year and there’s no time like to present to show to NFL teams that he’s put it together.

VintageRandy

October 20th, 2022 at 11:26 PM ^

You scoff at a 5th round grade for CJ but we’ve seen bigger flyers even this year: Gray, Hinton. Sometimes later round grades work out (Josh Ross) and sometimes they don’t (Gray and Hinton). The whole point is that these players are betting on themselves, and we should applaud and support them for doing so.

As for others: McLaurin is a RS FR - pump the brakes. On the other end it’s not entirely clear that all 5th years that have an optional 6th would be offered that chance, I.e. a 6th year Upshaw. Also DJ Turner is getting mocked to the first round… why would he be anything other than a lock to leave?

MaizeBlueA2

October 21st, 2022 at 2:12 PM ^

I don't scoff...it's the nature of things.

But all of those guys you mentioned...should have returned.

But for every one of those guys you mentioned? I can name guys who had a decision to be a Gray, Hinton, etc. and they chose to return.

So Johnson could be a Hinton/Gray...or he could be an Erick All, Aidan Hutchinson, Ben Bredeson, Lavert Hill...all guys who could've left the year before they did.

I'll support him either way.

Thanks for putting this together, OP. These are always fun.

Comments:

  • If a third-year RB (Dunlap) gets jumped by a slender first-year RB (Cabana) I'm thinking he's a transfer candidate.
  • Similarly, if a fourth-year WR (Dennis) finds himself behind a first-year WR (Morgan), he's probably out of here.
  • I can't see Jalen Perry sticking around to be a third-string CB.

Question:

  • How does Herring jump Lorenzetti?

MaizeBlueA2

October 20th, 2022 at 10:04 PM ^

I think Cabana is higher on the depth chart but Tavi plays more if he can get the "short yardage, power back role" that I don't see Edwards or Stokes taking.

In fact, I almost put a *transfer* as a / with Cole Cabana because we need that role. But I deleted it in favor of Tavi or Gash taking that power back spot.

Where Cabana gets the nod on the depth chart because it's more (in normal situations...who would be the next up?) - when you look at it like that, I think Cabana would be on the field, even though Tavi may have a role where we see him more often.

Kind of like Joel Honigford may get more snaps than Colston Loveland. But that's because he has that specialized blocking TE role. But if we're up 30 in the 3rd quarter against MSU...Loveland is the every down TE.

Good catch on Dennis, though, that should probably be an "OR" situation. Dennis is getting close to graduation though, I don't know his situation, but you don't transfer if you're a semester or two from a Michigan degree. Just suck it up and transfer after the year as a grad transfer.

Exact same for Perry. Nice catch x2.

Honestly, I see Herring as more of a ready made OG with a low ceiling, but a high floor. I'm just flat out not high on Lorenzetti.  Same for Denegal, Dunlap, Hall, Dennis, Guidice, Jones, Bahr or Iwunnah.

I'd really like to see more from Persi and Bounds as well - I think our OT recruiting has been lackluster. There is still time, that's why I say grad transfer in '23...and at least one of them should be ready by '24. I like Gentry the best.

I hope I'm WAY wrong, I felt the same about Gabe Newburg and as I mentioned...Eamonn Dennis, Newburg left but Dennis has been a "menace" on special teams this year and I couldn't be happier for him.  I didn't see it and he's turned into a great gunner.

On the flipside. I thought Mullings, Bennett, and Perry would be STARS. So WTH do I know? Of the freshman who don't play, I love Gentry and Zeke Berry. We'll see how that turns out.

Zinter and Oluwatimi are regarded as competing to be the first OL taken in the draft. [I believe I read that...well, now I must admit I'm not sure where (front page here?).]

Anyway: if Zinter returns, I'll regard that as a massively improbable coup. I've been fretting about the possibility of losing Hayes, Olu, and Zinter this offseason, with the 2023 draftability of Keegan plausible as well. If I'm proven way-mistaken on Zinter and Keegan, holy fortune.

MaizeBlueA2

October 20th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^

I'm going to assume you mean first at their position. Because they're not getting taken over a Tackle.

Even still...that is correct for Olu (#1 C on some boards). Zinter has slipped a little and he still has two years of eligibility after THIS season.

Zinter could play on the 2024 Michigan team if he wanted. Right now, I'll say he comes back and next year will be his last.

Nicely done fleshing that out. I think you would need to include WR in addition to some of the possible positions that would require a transfer-in for depth/starter purposes. That group of 3 of Wilson, Anthony and Henning is not that great imo. Wilson is a bonafide All-B1G-level starter as a true number 1 receiver and continues to prove that with his performance this year. Anthony is a strange evaluation though. I know he’s very popular around these parts and people want him to get more involved, but I just don’t see the traits that would make him an All-B1G-level receiver. I think he can be a good starting-level guy, but he’s been way overhyped imo. Henning just isn’t a true every down slot receiver. I think it would be smart to grab an experienced grad transfer receiver who could play on the outside and allow Wilson to play more in the slot along with some snaps for Henning in that role too

jdraman

October 20th, 2022 at 10:39 PM ^

I’m not saying they would absolutely NEED a transfer at WR. But I did say it should included among positions that a transfer should be considered being brought in for depth purposes. There is definitely talent in that WR room, No argument from me. But all the 2nd string players, including Clemons, would be RS FR. It’s not reasonable to expect all of them, or really any of them, to become a bonafide impactful starting WR next year. That’s not ideal for a Michigan team looking to continue contending for the B1G crown and the CFP. And I’m personally not a big believer in either Henning or Anthony being big time contributors next year. So, I’m merely suggesting that the WR room needs to be evaluated during the off-season after any attrition of NFL draftees or transfers-out. That’s all this is; a discussion about possibilities. Not declarative statements of absolute fact. I mean all the WRs could return next year for all we know and this discussion would be complete junk. No need to get so defensive and argumentative.

AZBlue

October 20th, 2022 at 11:15 PM ^

At Michigan, between the emphasis on running and the plethora of TEs I am not sure you need that many WRs.  Plus those factors are not going to attract many top tier grad transfers.

Also M is pushing for at least one 4-star WR to finish this class AND 5* N. Harbor will be coming in as a WR if he chooses M….should be a good fly-route target even as a (very) raw true Frosh.  (Still think he will be a better DE when/if he opts to add the weight.)

I was doing the math in my head earlier today, and I’m pretty sure, if I’m not mistaken, that Ronnie Bell could stay 2 more years if he wanted to (I’m sure he doesn’t) After his COVID redishirt, and then his medical redishirt.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but this seems to be what’s adding up in my head.

It would be like having our own Julian Edelman sure handed guy every year if he stayed.

Outside chance Roman Wilson tests the draft this year, and there have been rumors that AJ Henning is frustrated with his role in Ann Arbor and could consider a transfer. I strongly hope against both but don’t shoot the messenger.

If I have learned anything throughout the last at least 3 years with Michigan football, it is to not freak out over a player or coach leaving the program.  First Charbonnet left and it seemed like this program was spiraling downhill.  Haskins and Corum did just fine.  Next Giles Jackson left and although he wasn't one of our stud receivers, he was a very important piece to our special teams dominance.  We have been just fine if not better since he has left at both ST and receivers.  Then Gattis left and although I still think he is a solid O-coordinator, we are realizing Harbaugh and or Weiss played a large part in last year's success with Gattis.  Hinton then out of nowhere joined the draft and although he would have been great to provide more depth, I am not sure if we would have seen the emergence of Mason Graham as much if Hinton stays and especially no Kenneth Grant which is going to be huge for next year.  I guess my point in all of this is I believe one thing Harbaugh is very good at is building a team and coaching structure.  Maybe he has had some fortune the last 3 years, but every time I think we may take a step back it seems we almost take a couple steps forward.  I like where this program is headed with Harbaugh and I have confidence that if the staff feels like we cannot lose a player, they will do whatever they need to do to make it workout.

I enjoy the depth charts.  Although I get it, I thought it was disrespectful to remove a captain from the depth chart on the assumption he will transfer.

At least put Cade on the list with (likely to transfer)
