Alternatives to Freep: Michigan Messenger and More

Submitted by Germany Shultz on
Here's a good website for Michigan news: http://michiganmessenger.com/ Some of the links are to Fr--p stories, but there are detailed summaries you can read without hitting the Fr--p site. All in all, a very good website I didn't know existed until a few days ago. And another reason to avoid going to the Fr--p for local news. Here's some more: Ch.7: http://www.wxyz.com/default.aspx Ch. 4: http://www.clickondetroit.com/index.html Ch.2: http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/ WJR: http://www.wjr.com/ WWJ: http://www.wwj.com/ Oakland County: http://www.theoaklandpress.com/ http://www.oaklandpolitics.com/ Political Right: http://www.rightmichigan.com/ Political Left: http://www.michiganliberal.com/ Please pass these links to your friends and add to the list

Good links... mlive.com has stuff from a few newspapers.. If we can't trust the Freep to fairly and properly report the things that we know about, how can we trust them to report on other topics that we don't know as much about?

While we're on this subject, I think this is a good time for me to say that Maize jerseys during a night game would be sweet, and who is this Mcfarlin you guys seem to hate?

...but I was wrong. The writing is pedestrian when it isn't inflammatory, and the comments field is a joke for UM fans. Not only does the "vile troll" from mlive post often, but there are at least two other really nasty UM-haters there. Also, it seems to take a lot longer for articles to load than it does with other websites. So, all I'm really "missing" is "news" that I can get pretty much anywhere, a lot of aggrivation from the anti-UM contingent, crappy navigation of their website, and the occasional Mitch Albom column that makes me remember that, a long time ago, he was a compelling writer. Oh: and that hour or so a day I used to waste reading and commenting there.

No Google account required, however if you do have a Google account, you can create custom sections based on locations or topics. It pulls headlines from around the world. I think it ranks them by how many articles cover the same topic within a given period. It also has a recommended reading area where it takes into account the articles that you have read in addition to your search history (if you want to enable that). I now have no reason to look at the local media and I can keep track of what's happening in the world from good quality journalism. http://news.google.com/ Also, there is this new Google product called Fast-Flip and it incorporates Google News into a webpage that allows for page turning kind of like a newspaper. I have yet to experiment with it though, so I don't know how good it is. Supposedly it works well on iPhones and other mobile devices. http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/
