All Final Four teams were Tournament Champions

Submitted by spigmoni on

I tried to do a quick look to see if this has been mentioned as a post, but anyway I thought this was an interesting note.

Essentially all the teams left are on a undefeated streak and all coming to a collision course.  Loyola hasn't had a loss in 14 games.  Michigan next up with 13 games.  Villanova at 9.  Kansas has a 7 game streak going.

Anyway, here's hoping we keep that streak going!  Find ways to win and survive, that's all we need!  So far, i'm loving that we've played different games and found ways to just win.  It's certainly not as pretty/easy like the way Villanova made it look but I think that may have given us confidence to win vs anybody.  Let's get it done!

Michigan has played Loyola-Chicago before in the tournament.

1964 in the Sweet Sixteen, an 84-80 Michigan win.

Hahaha.  Okay bad key point phrasing from me.  I guess the important thing was Tournament Champ over Regular Season Conf Champ maybe?  At least in our instance.  Mich State won Conference, we win BTT.  Xavier won big east?  Nova with the tournament.

On the contrary, Kansas won both regular and tournament.  And I guess Loyola won both as well.

Maybe there really wasn't a point at all.

Including this year's teams, the last 17 Final Fours dating back to 2002 have a breakdown of:

51 Of 68 Teams With A Conference Title (Either Regular Season Or Conf. Tournament)

  • 20 Of 51 - Regular Season Champions Only
  •   9 Of 51 - Conference Tournament Champions Only
  • 22 Of 51 - Both Regular Season & Conf. Tournament Champs

Michigan and Villanova are amongst the nine teams to make the Final Four when only winning their conference tournament, while Loyola and Kansas fit into the catergory of both regular season and conference tournament champions.

The 2000s has seen an average of exactly 3 of the 4 teams in the Final Four with a title earned in regular season or conference tournament play.
