Ali Haji-Sheikh/Michael Taylor

Submitted by Ace on

I know someone asked for this when I originally asked for suggestion about who I should profile on my site. Since the diary I originally posted on has long been buried, I figured I'd throw this on the board.

Where You At?: Ali Haji-Sheikh Edition

Update: Michael Taylor article is now up on the front page (link below). Thanks for the suggestions and I'll keep them coming.

I was born in '84 so obviously i don't actually remember Sheik, but this is one of the names my dad would bring up frequently during my early days when I was exploring the new world of michigan football. I think it was Remy Hamilton that triggered my father's recall of great kickers. Great article, btw. You learn something every day. And you learn some useless (to most) Michigan football facts every day, too on mgoblog :)

These have been great. Like T-Roy and Wolvrine32, the guys from the early 80's and to a lesser extent the last 70's) were my early Wolverine memories. Michael Taylor and Demetrius Brown. The only two QBs since Harbaugh that have not made it to an NFL roster. I think that Brown got booted off of the team (grades as I recall) and Taylor got hurt early in the 1989 season opening the door for Elvis to start as a freshman.

He left Michigan with a year of eligibility left to enter Harvard Law.  Bo said he had to go to Harvard because Michigan Law wouldn't admit him.  He was a player.  When asked why he was leaving early, he basicly said, "Been there, done that.  Time to move on."  I really enjoyed watching him.

Ali Haji-Sheik missing a few crucial field goals as a Wolverine (and back then he was sometimes called Hooky-Shank), and then coming out of nowhere as a Giant draft pick, hitting several during a pre-season game (and Howard Cosell getting all excited and calling him "The Sheik." maybe it was also the "Ali" thing?).

You 'da man.

The stadium crowd used to salute him with "Aleeeeeee Hajiiiiiiii Sheeeeeeikh!!!" after he made a big field goal.  He hit a couple a sweet 50+ yarders during his Michigan career.

He was on the Giants when I was growing up (my favorite team). My dad called him Ali Haji-Shank.

Just because he was my GSI for history, and a nice/smart dude, along with being a good player - Rob Renes.

I didn't realize that Taylor left on poor terms. It's shocking that Mo would keep Brown on the field considering he was obviously color blind.

Emil -- you have the wrong receiver from that vintage. Ken Higgins was the WR who left with a year of eligibility to go to Harvard law.
