#5 Wrestling knocks off #2 Ohio State in front of 7,000+ in Columbus

While #5 Michigan Basketball was busy beating Indiana for the 6th straight time, #5 Michigan Wrestling took on #2 Ohio State in Columbus about 30 minutes after the MBB game started.

Unfortunate B1G scheduling that they overlapped, but you could catch the last couple matches once the MBB game ended.

The highlight of the night and what proved to be the key win was an upset at 157 when Michigan's #10 Alec Pantaleo beat #6 Ke-Shawn Hayes from OSU by decision, 3-2.

Other than that, it went chalk in this dual as far as rankings go.

Michigan led 16-9 after 7 matches but OSU regained the lead after two straight bonus point wins to take a 17-16 lead. #8 Mason Parris brought it home with a 6-3 win, good for 3 team points and the win.

Results-

  • 125- #16 Drew Mattin (U-M) def. Heinselman (OSU), 12-6
  • 133- #1 Stevan Micic (U-M) def. #6 Pletcher (OSU) via major decision, 14-1
  • 141- #2 McKenna (OSU) def. #5 Kanen Storr (U-M) via tech fall, 18-3
  • 149- #3 Jordan (OSU) def. Malik Amine (U-M) via major decision, 17-4
  • 157- #10 Alec Pantaleo (U-M) def. #6 Hayes (OSU), 3-2
  • 165- #6 Logan Massa (U-M) def. Romero (OSU), 7-2
  • 174- #3 Myles Amine (U-M) def. Smith (OSU), 3-2
  • 184- #1 Martin (OSU) def. J.T. Correll (U-M) via tech fall, 24-9
  • 197- #2 Moore (OSU) def. Jackson Striggow (U-M), 12-5
  • Hwt- #8 Mason Parris (U-M) def. #19 Singletary (OSU), 6-3

Michigan beats Ohio State, 19-17. The 3rd win in the last 5 years over OSU and the 3rd straight in Columbus.

Oh yeah and one more thing, Michigan handed OSU an L in front of 7,465 at Value City Arena. They moved the dual from their usual wrestling arena, St. John Arena.

A quibble, if I may - there are probably a small, but not insignificant, number of people who are as proud of the victories in non-revenue sports as they would be for one in football. A few people may even be more proud, so even if to you it is only marginally newsworthy, try to uplift the athletic department as a whole....you know, like a fan of the school.

Speak for yourself.

The more Football continues to talk about how things are different and then go out and do the same BS we've had to watch for 15 years is making me lose interest and focusing elsewhere. Not to mention the ludicrous ticket prices.

Not all of the "basketball school now" posts are tongue-in-cheek.

Wrestling is huge in PA, especially in the coal regions of eastern and central PA.

It was brought there from eastern Europe by the Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, etc. that came to work in the anthracite coal mines in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

I used to wrestle in high school in northeast PA, and you would often see thousands of people for a big match.  They would frequently have to move matches to college gyms to handle the capacity.

The OP's picture above reminds me of what those atmospheres looked like.

Would have liked to have seen Embree vs Martin partially due to the fact that I am his younger brother’s football coach and I think Jelani could have given Martin a run. Still an impressive team win over a good squad.

Awesome. I channel surfed between the the bball game and the dual meet but every match I watched seemed to have a Buckeye winning. Glad we beat them. Impressive win on the mat. Go Blue!

It was nice to see the Columbus street urchins grab their coats and leave as soon as Parris’ hand went up in the air.

I can’t help but credit Warde for the job he’s done- so many championships and good teams in the athletic department.  We may have to lower ourselves to slimier business practices to make it really count in the most lucrative sport, but hopefully not.  GO BLUE!  Athletic and academic excellence on display!

One or two more elite recruiting classes may get  Michigan up to Penn St. level.  But they have to get the best of the best high schoolers to come there.  You can’t take under-the-radar types in wrestling.

I love what Mason Paris is doing.  True freshman going up against the big hogs.  Completely different body type than Adam Coon.  Coon went 6’5” 285 lbs with tree trunks for legs.    Paris is maybe 6’2” 230lbs..  but with unbelievable strength and athleticism.  He’s going to be fun to watch over the years.

Agree on recruiting. The rankings are more meaningful in wrestling because the best directly compete against each other in national tournaments, so we know who the best kids are going into college. Bormet seems to have a knack for recruiting so should be fun moving forward. We have some top freshman in redshirt this year and a couple horses lined up in the next class (McHenry and Amine). PSU will always be tough but it will be hard to replicate the quality of lineup they have this year and past couple years once Nickal, Nolf, Joseph and Hall graduate (all of whom are juniors and seniors).

Yep, tournaments allow for the compounding effect of bonus wins. Michigan doesn't have many bonus win guys so tougher to hang in those meets. PSU is so dominant because the four guys noted above getting pins and tech falls through most of the tournament. For the same reason, OSU will probably finish ahead of UM in the B1G and NCAA tournaments - more bonus win guys.

Huge win for Micic, who had not really wrestled this caliber of wrestler yet this year.  But an equally disappointing loss from Storr, hopefully he can right that by tourney time.

I was a HS wrestler about 100 years ago, so I've always followed Michigan's team and their usually outstanding wrestlers.  Didn't even realize this was televised, and accidentally turned it on about a minute into the final match.  So much drama and so much fun!  GO BLUE!

Personally I wouldn't call Pantaleo over Hayes an upset.  Hayes may be ranked higher, but Pantaleo had a severe bout with mono and missed the first month plus.  He's just now getting back into shape and wrestling well.  He's a two time all american and has a great chance to be top 3 this year.  Unfortunately I personally don't think anybody is gonna be able to take out Nolf at 157, the guy is a total beast, just beats people up on the mat.  Great win over OSU in the dual tho in front of a raucous crowd.  I'm not banking on a win next weekend, but I think our lineup matches up as well against PSU as anyone in the country, Go Blue!

My son made it to the state high school tourney last year in ohio and wrestled there. While a cool atmosphere for a wide eyed high school kid, the place is kind of a shithole. Not even close to Chrysler.
