4 Michigan OLs on Outland Watch List

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on July 25th, 2019 at 9:46 PM

Four Michigan Offensive linemen are on the Outland Trophy watch list. Four is the most of any team in the NCAA. They are Ben Bredeson, Michael Onwenu, Jon Runyan Jr., and Cesar Ruiz. In just one year Ed Warinner has completely renovated the offensive line. It seems there is real reason to look forward to a visibly better offense this year. And in the next few years, the new, higher ranking recruits, that have come to Michigan because he is here, should make the O Line even better.

Hope he stays for years.

Not that anyone would, but IF one were wondering why Onwenu made this list... Go watch the MSU video below, and see Onwenu/Ruiz drive Raquan Williams - one of the best DTs in the country - 5 yards downfield and into the end zone on Mason's TD run.

That is just amazing. It was just a couple years ago and it was nothing but hand wringing and anguish over OL.

Congrats to these 4 hard working guys and to the coaching staff as well.

Hate to get too excited but I’m feeling like this may be the year. Just might be.

Warriner can stay as long as he wants to, but only if he doesn’t want a promotion to OC.

Hopefully all of the offensive lineman can stay healthy, but I’m really confident in the depth and I think we can overcome an injury or two. I don’t remember the last time you could say that about a UM offensive line.

Agreed that the interior line depth is looking good but tackle injuries could still be problematic with steuber or mayfield trying to flip out to LT should Runyan go down at some point. Here’s to a healthy year for all our big fellas and some nice development for the freshman. It will be great when by next year we could go two and three deep at some of these line spots and the worst an injury would do is leave you concerned the next man up would be merely perfectly effective rather than a Herculean bulldozer on two feet.

Agree.  Even honest OSU fans will say he's one of the best OL coaches around. Most would take him back in a heartbeat over their current OL coach Studrawa.  But as a OC, Warinner lacks a lot. Him and Beck (now at Texas) were the co-OCs in 2015 at OSU which many OSU fans consider even better than their 2014 NC team but blew it against MSU and OSU fans pointed the fingers at Warinner and Beck who found jobs at other places after the season. Ed W. eventually ended up as an OL at Minnesota.  As an OL coach - one of the very best out there.  As an OC - not so much.  So yes, I agree, he's welcome as long as he's happy as our OL coach.  Just have to wonder if he eventually wants bigger things.

Warinner is absolutely one of the best OL coaches in the country. Look at the 3 stars he has sent to the league and the Remington award winners he has coached.  He never should have been promoted to OC and it’s no surprise he was awful, but that doesn’t make him any less elite as an O line coach.  You may be able to knock him slightly as a recruiter but even he more than makes up for it by developing the talent he signs.

Plus both Stueber and Mayfield will one day be on that list.  Coach Ed is building real depth and will effectively have 5 high quality starters for 2019.  Can't remember last time in history you could say that about our OL.
