3 Suspended OSU players won't play vs Toledo

Submitted by MichiganMan2424 on

According to ESPN, suspended players Jordan Hall, Corey Brown, and Travis Howard won't play tomorrow vs Toledo. Although the chance of an upset is still very small, this doesn't hurt.

If I remember correctly, these players had been reinstated, so being re-suspended is a little troubling for OSU.

And this line from the article is also interesting.

"The NCAA also said Friday that facts submitted by the university about the violation raise further questions that must be answered before the players can be reinstated."

So the question becomes is OSU holding them out another game because OSU got some bad PR similar to the reaction they got from Tressel's initial 2 game suspension (unlikely) or because they are worried there are more issues with these guys that could result in forfeiting the game down the road due to playing them.

Also, there's a question as to whether I can write a longer sentence than the last one.

I think they knew they'll beat Toledo so they're holding them out again so they can say how harsh they're coming down on their players.

When players get suspended for games that OSU could win with all its backups, it's really not a penalty at all. That's like catching your kids doing something bad and grouding them for Monday night.

Obviously OSU is pretty remorseful about all the goings-on a-doin'. Why else would they sit their players? I think they've clearly learned their lessons. Good for them.

From the article:

The "facts submitted by the university have raised further questions that need to be answered before the reinstatement process is complete," the NCAA said.

It seems the players have not yet been reinstated so all the talk about OSU doing this to look good, etc. is not relevant.

It would be great if they kept on screwing up so badly that all of the cronyism in the world can't keep THE Ohio State University from paying for their long tradition of cheating.

“The problem for Ohio State is that this is more than an issue of just punishment; the NCAA is not satisfied with the results of its investigation, and the fact that the three players gave conflicting reports to officials and investigators about why they were at the fundraiser and who paid them cannot possibly help their case for an expedited reinstatement. Two of the three suspended players named a former Buckeye as the source of the money, and the third named a "representative of athletics interests." All names were redacted by Ohio State on the documents acquired by the Columbus Dispatch.”

Now we have:

1. One player says he received cash from a former player for working the event

2. One player says he received cash from "a representative of athletics interests" for working the event.

3. One player says he received cash from a teammate and didn't say why he was paid.

4, Two players say they didn't get paid.

I especially like this bit:

"The two players who did not receive money observed someone carrying several envelopes during the event. However, the identity of that individual also was redacted by Ohio State attorneys."

On what grounds, I wonder?

I don't understand what else needs to be shown that shows a lack of institutional control. Someone in the NCAA is getting paid to not say anything and it's pising me off. How OSU is getting away with this without a MAJOR, major penalty is beyond me.

It's unbelievable.,,.like the late 90's when Charles Woodson & Marcus Ray (and others, allegedly) were straight up getting cash while playing while playing for The University of Michigan and neither the players or UM was punished for this cheating.

At least the NCAA got around to punishing the Michigan football cheaters during the RR era and they hammered the worst cheaters in the history of NCAA Basketball - the 1990's University of Michigan Wolverines. The NCAA has had their hands full recently... if they hadn't spent so much time in Ann Arbor over the past decade they may have had a handle on this current mess.

Possibly, OSU will be less likely to get off with a hand slap by the new infractions chair. Gene Smith and the former Infractions chair, Dennis Thomas, served together on a scholarship committee (both have also been on many NCAA committees, at least one in common, but I am not sure if they were on any together). If anyone wants to research this, see Dennis Thomas bio below.
