2023 preseason expectations ACC
The one conference that has maintained stability in recent years is the ACC. But we’ll see how long that lasts.
See first comment for image.
Clemson & FSU are the clear frontrunners at the top. They play each other in September, and then might play each other again in December.
And then there’s a very deep middle tier (i.e. typical ACC mediocrity). There are 7 teams spanning 19 spots from 29-47. Which of those teams is most likely to rise up to compete with Clemson/FSU at the top of the standings?
It’s sad to see VaTech among the bottom teams. That’s a former perennial top 10 program that might never bounce back; I suspect they’ll have the Beamer era to look back on as the glory days, and then nothing else like it ever again.
Prior threads:
For all the times you’ve shouted 45-23! at me, if I were a jerk I would respond by saying something like…
“56-27, 62-39, 31-20, 30-27, 42-13, 42-28, 42-41, 26-21, 37-7, 21-10, 42-7, 14-3, 42-39, 25-21, 37-21, etc.”
…but I’m not, …so I won’t.
You can thank me. :-p
Hey, look you’re a reasonable Buckeye fan, unlike many! I’ll keep shouting 45-23!! If you want to yell out final scores go ahead. At the end of the day there will be more victories and more points for Michigan than there will be for OSU!
lead the series, winning record against Day @ OSU!
There's always the next game, my man. That's what this rivalry is about, is that there's always the next game. ;-)
Yes there is!!
now that the banter is over! Do you wish OSU would run the ball more this year? Unproven QB for the first time in 20 years, and two really good RB’s? Or is the OSU online not built for running all game?
I would like to see a solid running game, but I don't know that they need to run more...just need to run more effectively when they do run.
An unproven QB doesn't concern me until I've seen reason on the field to be concerned.
My view about the O-line is the opposite: I *am* concerned about the O-line until I've seen reason on the field to no longer be concerned. This may make running the ball a less effective alternative...but if the OL lacks in quality protection it may also make it more challenging for a first-year QB to have success. I do not perceive that this is a championship caliber O-line. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.
Just because VT beat one of Urban's best teams does not make them a perennial top 10. I grew up in Virginia and they were horrible for the majority of it. Yes they have had some good teams, and Beamer finally got it going but it's nothing short of a miracle he was not canned prior to that. What happened to VT was Michael Vick. Once Vick went there Beamer had a lock on the tidewater area and was able to pull a lot of good recruits that usually would have split between UVA and VT (some UNC).
I do not deny that VT had a decent run, but perennial top 10, IMHO is a bridge too far.
From 1999-2011, VaTech was ranked 11th or better at some point of the year, every year, with the only exception being 2008 when their highest ranking was 15th. And then still ranked in the top 15-20 many years since. (EDIT: ...and prior...they were top 15 at some point of the year every year from 1994-2012.)

I guess I considered a 13-year span perennial.
I guess I considered a 13-year span perennial.
It’s okay, I know plenty of OSU grads so I understand how vocabulary can be a challenge for you.
(sorry, couldn’t resist)

I believe UM/OSU both had some perennial spans.
I believe to this day, Va Tech is still the largest, best, not sure how to explain it but they actually came to Kalamazoo and played Western Michigan. That was a crazy weekend in Kalamazoo!
UVA also played at Western.
Not saying they did not have a great run. I think you asked and answered the right question, Does 13 year run make you perennial? I would argue that unless you can get back to another stretch of top 10 finishes (although they did not have 13 straight top 10 finishes) that your program had a very good consistent run. We may just be disagreeing on the term "perennial"
Additionally my second team is UVA so I have a bias toward VT. Just full disclosure.
1990 to 2013 or so is perennial in all other relevant respects. Take flowers for example. Lot of teams (Braska, Washington, Miami, Florida State) are more like annuals these days but in the scope of time are also perennials.
CFN seems pretty high on Miami at #20. What am I missing?
That CFN is sometimes (often?) wrong.
EDIT: Perhaps you prefer Versus' ranking of Miami.
Ah, yes. That's more like it.
I do think it would be kind of funny to watch FSU implode under all these offseason expectations, as they’ve seemed to do quite a bit in recent years.
September 23rd should be an interesting day / night for football. Oklahoma visits Cincy. Iowa visits PSU. FSU plays at Clemson. And, the Buckeyes go to South Bend.
I think Bama Coastal takes this shit. I miss Va Tech being a power BTW. Yeah their fans were kind of Chuds at the ‘12 Sugar Bowl but they were *sincere* Chuds.
