2019 MBB Recruiting: 4* G Harlond Beverly

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on April 9th, 2019 at 4:36 PM

With the Poole announcement out there, probably worth mentioning that there's some talk on UMHoops' board (def worth the subscription btw) of the bball staff making up for lost time with Harlond Beverly. He's a bouncy 6'4" combo guard from SE Michigan, but he's currently playing at IMG Academy. Slashing guard. Very good athlete. Decent shooter, though apparently he doesn't shoot a ton from the outside.

Adding any combo of Beverly/Wagner/Quinones would be great, assuming all 3 "departures" end up being final.

He actually plays for Montverde Academy. It literally says it in the title of the video you posted.

To be fair, the title could mean game highlights for a game played @ Montverde. Now as for the montage that opens the video of Beverly in jerseys that say “Montverde” on them, I can only defend OP so much.

I think I'd prefer Quinones just because of shooting, but Beverly has more upside in the long run. Would be quite a feat to sneak in late and grab him as he had essentially eliminated us from consideration because we'd basically done the same for him.

Yes, if all leave, we definitely need to look at these recruits.  As another post suggested, we would really need to look at grad transfers too since they could contribute immediately.  If all three leave and we don't bring in more ready to play talent, I doubt we make the tourney again.  We would lose all of our starting offensive talent/scorers and only have a little used bench with one proven scorer, Livers.

Doubt we make the tourney?  We have some highly thought of but unproven talent that was on the bench last year with Johns, DeJulius, Castleton and Nunez, plus Top 50 recruit Jalen Wilson coming in.  We won’t be national title contenders in all likelihood, but we should be a solid tourney team assuming those sophomores take a leap (at least 2 of them).

Yes, I'm probably being way too pessimistic.    Beilein might work some magic with this talent and get them back to the FF, lol.  But none of the above have contributed significantly at the college level let alone played a starting role.  We would have only two proven starters who really can't create offensively and one proven bench player.  Next year would be quite a question mark at this point.  I wouldn't make any assumptions.

I'd be surprised if you guys missed the tournament. Livers can score, and I thought Brooks showed some decent potential toward the end of the year. I'd assume he improves, and then I think Teske should improve as well. Simpson may not be a good shooter, but he can find guys who are open to shoot. And then there are other guys coming in or guys who can step up. You guys might not be the Big Ten favorites but you should at least make the tourney.

First of all, 3 good, proven starters is pretty good. We came into this season with 2. It's also clear that expectations for Simpson and Teske are higher than a year ago.

Second, player development is expected. It would be foolish not to given Beilein's track record.

Third, if Poole and Iggy do leave, there's a natural assumption that they will be replaced by talented players who might just contribute.

Do not underestimate this freshman group because their lack of playing time. They are super talented and committed! I am very excited to watch them next year.

To the topic I want Beverly. Kid has grown leaps and bounds in one year. And when you look at him growth can still be attained physically.

I completely agree with you.  I am really excited to see what DeJulius, Nunez, and Castleton can do.  Yesterday was not great news, but we have dudes, and we have more of them on the way.

I also need to note that a week or so ago I called BS on a couple of statements you made about the chemistry or lack thereof from the team during the second half of the season and its relation to some players being focused on going pro.  After the developments yesterday, I have to say that it would appear that your assessment had merit.  I stand corrected.

It's all good. Hard to believe someone on a random message board that is why I said you didn't have to. I get some good info from time to time.

I knew something was up with team just by the looks that were given on the court then like I said comments in the paper. I got specific info on when that all started to happen.

My guess would be around the time of the Penn State game.  That entire game was baffling as we had just beat Wisconsin to avenge the first loss and I thought it would ignite the team into the next gear.  Three days later at Penn State we were a complete mess with Poole jacking several awful shots in the second half to stymy what should have been a comeback win.  By the time of the home MSU game everybody on the team was playing hero-ball and Beilein was doing regular face-palms on the bench.

I have never seen in before, and I am not "calling him out" for it, but for the first time since he has been here I kind of feel like Beilein kind of stopped coaching this team.  We did not look like we were prepared for specific opponents and their strengths/weaknesses down the stretch and there was almost no coaching creativity or ingenuity at times when Beilein usually thrives.  It also baffled me that Beilein did not play DeJulius more, and in hindsight, it may have been to prevent him from developing some bad offensive habits that Beilein was done trying to correct with other players.

Like I said it was around 14-15 games left in season. So I haven't looked to see if that was PSU but that would make sense especially with the details you mentioned.

Your second paragraph is interesting to me because I pretty much agree. Switching has always given JB problems because his only solution to it is have guys who can make one on one baskets against the big who switched.

I think DDJ should of played too. His one drawback is he ran no system at all in high school. It was here take the ball and go score. That is hard for a kid to come into JBs system and learn but I feel like he still should of ben put out there. He isn't a kid who is going to lose confidence imo and he plays super hard!
