2018-19 Michigan Hockey schedule is gettin' weird

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

USCHO has an annual spreadsheet where it collects all of the scheduling tidbits released across college hockey and organizes it into a big Google doc.

Michigan's 2018-19 schedule is nearly complete with one more regular season game to be made known.

And boy oh boy, does it look strange.

After a January 1-2 GLI last season the pretty much killed any hopes of drawing a decent crowd, the GLI will return to late December. How late you ask? Very late.

The 2018 GLI is going to be played on December 30-31. Michigan will face Tech in the nightcap with the early game being Lake Superior State vs Michigan State at 4pm.

Short turnaround to say the least. The Red Wings have a tradition of playing a home game on New Year's Eve. So the GLI 3rd place game is going to be an 11:30am puck drop with the championship game being at 2pm. The Red Wings will obviously play later that evening. A tripleheader of hockey.

But wait, there's much more. Just four days later Michigan will travel to face Notre Dame in a weekend series to open up January on the 4th and 5th. The Saturday game on the 5th is gonna be outdoors at Notre Dame Stadium.

Just 3 days later, Michigan will play an ultra rare Tuesday night home game against Merrimack from Hockey East before traveling to Ohio State 3 days later for a weekend series. The first of two bye weeks will follow.

To recap: Michigan will play 7 games over a 14 day span.

The Merrimack game in January was likely added because Michigan will only play at Yost 4 times in the second half of the season as far as regular season games go.

There still is one more game to be announced. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Ferris State on the road as a season opener because the season ain't starting 3 weeks into October.

I feel like those in charge of NCAA hockey could do a better job promoting the sport and getting exposure, but then again when you look at how the NHL shits all over itself, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

Just curious what you might be seeing, WD, that may point towards Ferris as our  most likely opponent for the season opener in a road game.  Just a hunch, or do they also have an active search going on for an early season opponent?  And why are you thinking it's going to be a road game rather than at Yost?

I'll hang up and listen...

If that is why Merrimack was added, then that seems like a silly solution. "We have too few homes games in 2019. Better schedule a random team for a random non-conference game on a Tuesday. That'll appease the season ticket holders"
