2013 Men's NCAA Swimming & Diving Division I Championships - Day 2
Today is the biggest day of the competition. The most points are up for grabs. Michigan needs to extend their lead today, because tomorrow is their weakest day. Scores after Day 1:
1. Michigan 153
2. Cal 123.5
3. Auburn 112.5
4. USC 100
5. Texas 99

100 Breast UM seeded 3rd and 7th

I won't bother listing Cal's seeds since they aren't based on shaved/tapered times.

We're in a good position. I like our chances. Go Blue! Bring home the hardware.

... need to extend our lead -- by how much? And given the results from yesterday, is that something that seems feasible? Probable?
I know nothing about the tournament, nor that Michigan was a contender, but now I'm a nervous wreck playing out the scenarios. Sports... ugh.
It is tough to say how much Michigan needs because who knows how much Cal will improve over their seedings. I do think that as little as a 1 point increase would do them good.
Michigan had kind of a tough morning. But Cal really didn't improve a whole lot. If the results from the morning hold we would extend our lead to 50 points. Miguel Ortiz had an outstanding morning session, hopefully it carries through to the evening.

Cal has Tom Shields doing his fly, back double today, plus they are really deep in backstroke. Plus, Whitaker isn't swimming at his top level this weekend. I would guess that Cal makes more of a move today than tomorrow ... they may even take the lead.
Michigan has the 1650 tomorrow which will be a great event for us (Cal won't score a point in that event). Tomorrow is also the 400 free relay, which is Cal's weakest. I hope it doesn't come down to the last event simply because my blood pressure will be through the roof - but it sure will make for an exciting meet.
Looking way ahead, this UM team is really built to win next year - we lose very few seniors compared to other schools. Back in November, I would have thought anything above 5th place at NCAA would be a great finish for this year's squad.
Go Blue
Here's a nice summary of the morning. They Michigan men are performing well enough to hold off Cal and Arizona.

I'm not so sure about Coach Bottom and Coach Bishop's shirts.
Go Blue
Based on the prelims, Cal could make a small move today, although Michigan could slightly stretch its lead with a good showing in tonight's finals. Expect Arizona to shoot up to third and Auburn, Texas, and Florida to fade. If the finals mirror the prelims, standings after tonight would look something like this:
- Michigan 328
- Cal 280.5
- Arizona 236
- USC 216
If only I had seen this before doing the math myself. Oh, well.
Thanks for the updates everyone, keep them coming if you can and Go Blue.
This would be as remarkable as when Jennie Ritter led the Wolverines to a softball title. Cold weather universities are just not supposed to win these things!
Also nice to see former Michigan HS swimmer Youngquist doing well for Texas.
thanks for the updates & GO BLUE!
That is how you start an evening session. Michigan is your 2013 200 Medley Relay National Champions in a new NCAA Record.
This is also a new American record also, correct? If collegeswimming.com's blog is correct...
I think you've got me there. That explains why collegeswimming.com is showing an "N" next to UM's time, presumably for NCAA record, and an "A" next to Cal, presumably for an American record. Good catch.
WOO HOO!
Michigan leads Cal 336-301.5 after Day 2. No one else close.
