2012-13 Hockey roster released, FR goalie Steven Racine not on it
Really hope they forgot to add him on the roster......or else that puts a lot of pressure on Rutledge to succeed fast.

I would hope it was a mistake on someones part since I have not heard anything about him but I don't follow hockey recruiting very closely though besides what gets posted here.

I don't ever remember four goalies on the roster so I'm not sure why this season would be any different.

It's a big deal when it's a scholarship guy not on the roster.

Correct. He is technically a walkon, because he did not sign a Letter of Intent. That does not mean that he didn't get some scholarship money. Freshman walkons sometimes take some extra time to be cleared by compliance.
The Freshmen who signed letters of intent: Andrew Copp, Connor Carrick, Daniel Milne, Boo Nieves, Jared Rutledge, Justin Selman, Jacob Trouba.

FWIW, there is a Steven Alexander Racine in the campus directory, so he does appear to be enrolled.

I hear what you're saying. Are students given an option of opting out of being listed?

Bob Miller at http://michigan.rivals.com/forum.asp?sid=883&fid=41&style=1 is saying it's just because Racine is a walk-on and can't be listed yet because he needs to be enrolled/school-started whatever it is for it to be technically legal. But given that nothing else was said, it's probably a pretty fair assumption that Racine will be on the team and doesn't have any issues to prevent that, other than technicalities/formalities.

So I'm guessing the goaltending battle will be Janecyk vs Rutledge vs Racine.

I talked to Red in Chicago a few months ago. He said that going into the season the job is Jared's to lose. Based on his history Steven is still an unknown, and Jany has had only a small amount of ice time. He said that the best goalie will have a chance to show he can play, but to start out it will most likely be Jared.

But I'm almost positive I read somewhere that Red flat-out promised the starting job, from day one, to Jared in recruiting him. Which isn't common, at least not from someone honest like Red and I'm sure he only did it because of Campbell and then Gibson and leaving Michigan in pretty dire straits after Hunwick (Thank Jesus that Tiny Jesus was Tiny Jesus, otherwise...), but he still did it. Of course, that doesn't mean that Jared will play every minute of every game this season, but he's definitely the heir-presumptive. I think absolute worst case for him playing time wise is a Friday/Saturday split, with the best man winning the job come the new year, like Hogan/Sauer in 2008-2009 and he could very well end up playing every or nearly every minute available in goal.
