2011 Starting D - Prediction
Now that we have a new D-Coordinator, I was wondering what our starting D will look like. I'm assuming Mattison runs the 4-3.
My prediction:
DE (Strongside) - VanBergen
DT- Campbell/Ash
NT- Martin
DE (Weakside) - Black
MLB - Demens
OLB - Gordon/Ryan
OLB - Roh/Ryan
CB (Strongside) - Woolfolk
CB (Weakside) - Avery
SS - Robinson
FS - Johnson
Thoughts?

WDE-Black
SDE-Roh
NT-Martin
DT-RVB-I think he has the requisite size and this allows for more of a rush off the edge. Could also kick out to DE and allow Ash/Campbell/Washington spot duty in the middle.
MLB-Demens
OLB-Jones/Fitzgerald
CB-Woolfolk/Floyd
FS-Vinopal/MRob
SS-Kovacs/Gordon/Johnson/???
With the exception whether RVB plays DT or DE, I don't expect many surprises from the front 7 and the corners. I have no idea who the safeties are going to be. I love Kovacs but he presumably won't be doing as much of the up at the LOS stuff that he was under GERG and I don't know if he's the best fit in a 4-3.

IMO, the OLB spots are just as wide open as the safety spots.

Campbell and Q. Washington will be battling for the NT job. I really doubt they would put Martin there.

Roh, RVB, and Black will not be on the field at the same time except maybe for passings situations. If you start Roh, RVB, and Black at the same time, we have no proven back-up at the DE spot. IMO, Black is the back-up to RVB and Roh.

I wish M-Rob would have been red shirted last yr as he got very limited time. Would have been amazing to have him for four years in this defense.

Roh will not be an OLB, he will be playing weakside DE ahead of Black

Roh is definitely a DB. We have a ton of depth now in the back 7, as I expect a lot of RR's young reruits to step up. Deciding who is a LB,S or CB will be the tough part. I see this.
RDE- Roh - Wilkins - Beyer - Paskorz
UT - MArtin - (Van Bergen) - Ash - Talbott
NT Washington v.Campbell - (Ash) (and maybe Cooper)
LDE Van Bergen - Black - Watson - Rock(RS, moved to DT) - Heitzman(RS?)
WLB - Furman vs. Mike Jones - K.Jones/Hawthorne/Poole
MLB Demmens - Bell - Morgan(Ryan)
SLB Fitzgerald vs. Jake Ryan (Bell and Willingham also in mix to start possibly as well as loser of weakside battle) - clark
CB Woolfok,Avery,Floyd,Christian,Countess,Hollowell,Brown,Taylor(maybe Mcclure)
S Kovacs,C.Johnson and M.Robinson will compete for the 2 starting spots in the base D. Either Floyd,Christian or possibly Vinopal(shudder!) will come into the FS spot on obvious pass downs. Woolfolk is arguably best at FS, but he's our best CB by far, so he HAS to stay IMO. backups at S are Vinopal,T.Gordon,M.Williams,T.Carter,G.Brown and loser of the competition to start.

I think by then, we'll have a better guess on this topic.
