#10 Penn State at #17 Iowa - Saturday Night

Submitted by Mike Damone on October 10th, 2019 at 11:12 AM

Penn State plays at Iowa on the ESPN Saturday night game.  Should be a really fun and interesting game to watch, especially for Michigan fans, given we just played Iowa and are headed to Happy Valley next week.  How Iowa handles Penn State may be a solid benchmark on the strength of the Michigan defense, and perhaps even how far our offense needs to come, as compared to Penn State.

In watching the game – assume the following four scenarios (know there could be several permutations).

A) Penn State beats Iowa in a closely fought game.

B) Iowa beats Penn State in a closely fought game.

C) Penn State blows out or wins convincingly over Iowa.

D) Iowa blows out or wins convincingly over Penn State.

Don’t know how others feel – but in order, I would prefer D), then A), then C) with B) least preferred.   D) for sure because it could mess with Penn State’s head and, well, Fuck Penn State.  Would put A) over C) slightly for the psyche of Michigan, knowing we are not clicking on all cylinders yet, despite the fact we are "close".  Though I want Iowa to win - don’t like the B) scenario much – think it would provide the most danger for Penn State to be pissed and more fired up in front of their home fans - though I am sure they will be at some level anyways, playing Michigan.

Thoughts?

Gotta believe everyone here is rooting for an Iowa blowout !  Go Hawkeyes!

An Iowa blowout opens the door for the possibility of an Uber-motivated PSU squad in a night home game the next week, looking to make up for a poor performance the previous week. Teams in college do that all the time.

To me the ideal scenario is a close PSU win, enough to give them a false sense of security on how they’re playing. A close loss would be the next best thing.

If winning the B1G is the defined goal then Michigan wants Iowa to win. If the CFP is the goal then Michigan wants PSU to win. Otherwise, go with whatever bias you hold.

I think we want Penn State to win.  That way they are more likely to be over confident when we play them.  If they lose on Saturday night, they'll be even more motivated to kick our asses.

That is just how I see it.

OT Kind of:  Sorry, I don't have enough points to post elsewhere yet.  Curious about everyone's opinion/knowledge about the selection for games October 26th.  Asking because my dad is blind in one eye and doesn't see great out of the other and hasn't gone to a night game since the original one in 2011 and usually avoids the 3:30 games late in the year because he simply can't see under the lights very well.  Is it possible that there are two BIG10 games at night.  As much as UM/ND would be good for ratings, I would think a Wisconsin/OSU game would be top choice providing they are both undefeated still.  These decision would have to be made before Michigan played PSU right?  Any knowledge on the selection process etc would be appreciated, thank you.

I think Iowa winning a close game is best for UM.  One, it gives PSU a loss to match our loss to Wiscy preserving our ability to control our own destiny if other east foes drop a B1G game somewhere.  Two, it makes our close win against Iowa look good.  Three, a close loss doesn't make PSU look bad, but still gives them a loss.

We want Iowa to win no matter what (we already beat them and PSU is in the East), and I'd actually prefer it to be close/a let down because that to me seems much more likely to mentally mess with PSU in a way that could carry over to the next game. Also, a close PSU loss means we play a higher ranked team next week.
