'09 Freshman redshirts
Just wondering. Forcier, Roh, DRob, Big Will, and Vincent Smith have played in the 2 or more game limit that rules out your redshirt. Or I believe the rule is 2 games. Anyone think any more Freshman will get their games in or will the rest of the class be redshirted?

Emilien, Teric Jones, and Mike Jones have also lost their redshirts. That's all I can think of at this point.

It is 1 game. If you play 2 and get hurt then you can't get a medical redshirt, but for everyone 1 game burns the redshirt.

I am thinking RR mentioned that it isnt always the games played but a combination of games played AND the number of plays you're involved in? IIRC RR mentioned this at one of his pressers. See you in Iowa.

According to the box score on mgoblue, J.T. Turner made a tackle on Saturday. Did anyone notice him in the game?

Turner is NOT on the participation log.

in today's press conference that JT Turner played on Saturday. So, he's on the way to getting his redshirt burned.
I wouldn't be shocked if the plan is to get him more special teams time against Iowa, with the hopes that he could rotate in against Delaware St. and possibly be a spot contributor the rest of the season, so that the defense could go nickel at some point (lord knows Tressel is hoping JT Floyd is out there defending DeVier Posey 1 on 1).

IMO, they should have redshirted him. The season is damn near half over. How much can he really help this year? I hope UM isn't going to look back in 2013 and wish JT had another year left.

Rivals supposedly confirmed with sports information department that turner did not play.

Haha, this is hilarious. Back and forth with this thing. I really hope they don't play him this year. Yeah, it'd be great to get some more depth in the secondary, but looking at the big picture, I'd rather have him around in 2013.

If they did, indeed, burn Turner's redshirt, I hope to see him a lot the rest of the season. I know it's a lot to ask of a freshman who arrived late, but he could possibly provide depth and even a big play or two at CB and S.

is another guy whose redshirt has been burned.
October 5th, 2009 at 12:21 PM ^
Injuries and horrible performance by others aside, how many games can usually pass before coaches think it's not worth burning a guy's redshirt? I ask this with J.T. Turner in mind. From the beginning of the season RR expressed his desire/opinion to redshirt Turner under normal circumstances. He included Vlad Emilien too, but he apparently cannot be a redshirt any longer. So my question is, if Turner continues not to see the field, after which game would be reasonably safe to say that he will not play at all this year?

Turner is listed as having a tackle.

Turner's not on the participation log.
(Anybody else wanna join in?)

Do players get any say on whether or not they redshirt?
If I were an incoming freshmen, I'd most definitely want to stretch my scholarship to 5 years so I would have additional time to finish my degree and/or have the option of starting a Masters. Especially if the alternative is playing a handful of snaps and possibly some special teams.
October 5th, 2009 at 9:06 PM ^
Your comment about starting a masters is justifiable, but there is a "scholarship" for athletes to complete their degree when their eligibility expires. I ran the 5-year plan, I know.

I'm not on the participation log and I had a tackle on Saturday too!!!!!!!!
P.S. I hate Dantonio's frickin' guts and I hope Miguel Cabrera's wife beats the shit out of him!

What game did Je'Ron Stokes play in?
October 5th, 2009 at 1:02 PM ^
Against Western Michigan, Rich Rod called a timeout with about a minute to go. At that point, Omameh, Mealer, Dorrestein, Khoury and Barnum ( I think ) came in, along with the CONER, MIKE COX, Je'Ron Stokes and maybe Roundtree.
On Saturday, Stokes played special teams.

If you appear in even one play, your redshirt is burned. The exception is if you suffer an injury during the first three weeks of the season that causes you to miss the rest of the year. Then you can apply for a medical redshirt.
At this point in the season, any freshman who appears has used up a year of eligibility even if he suffers a season-ending injury. The cutoff for medical redshirt eligibility has passed.

Redshirt, one of the most overly fussed about topics in the entire nation. Much ado about little in my estimation. Between attrition, injuries, and holding on to many meh players for a 5th season, I fail to see the over arching glory in the Redshirts.
