The State Of Our Open Threads: After Colorado State

Well, it is that time of the year again. Really, it is the best time of the year for many of us, for once again, college football dominates of weekend television viewing, or sometimes, it dominates our actual field of view if we are fortunate enough to be at games, either in Ann Arbor or elsewhere throughout the season.

As Michigan fans, we have exhalted in the ups, and suffered through the downs, and many of us have done so for years, decades even. All the while, we have certainly had a fair amount to say about it. Sometimes, what we have said is rather colorful. Some of that speech ends up tracked and summarized on this blog by some guy that was once described as "putting his scUM degree to use" by RCMB, and someone "with a lot of time on his hands" by Bucknuts.

For those people, I would like to correct inaccuracies - first, it's degreeS, in my case, and further, I am in fact a busy man generally, but I work smart and not hard, and thus, I have time for things like this.

Welcome to the tenth season of "The State Of Our Open Threads".

There will be no graphics this time, of course. I don't know how many of you have seen "N=1" graphed before, but it is difficult to draw much from such a thing. We generally wait for the end of the non-conference before we worry about that feature.

As for yesterday, the thread was dominated by the "Cade" and "JJ" talk - 247 mentions to 138 mentions. Now, we know what Jim said, and of course, being astute fans, we went ahead and provided our thoughts on who should start all the same. Actually, no matter whose boat you are in here, everything was evidence that - season in and season out - the most popular person on the bench is the backup QB, or in this case, who one believes should fill that popular role. Clearly, some of you want Cade to be popular, others want JJ to popular, and in each case, you believe they would be most popular sitting down next to the phone to the booth.

It was a calm and collected game beyond that, however. There were only 34 fucks given and 30 shits given, which is low even for a non-conference game. Further, there were actually more mentions of "fire" related to various coaches, although many of those - but not all of them - were in jest. We only saw twenty mentions of "suck" as well, many of them in the first two drives. That simply goes to show that some fans have short memories and forget that we almost never get out to a fast start. Like many ancient, legacy corporations, it takes us a moment to get rolling.

There were 103 mentions of the offense and 79 mentions of the defense. The talk of the defense was largely complimentary, as you might expect, and eventually, so was the talk of the offense. As indicated above, some thought the first several drives were, well, offensive, but I don't know what you really get from one game other than a snippet of information which in turn a few folks roll into gross overreactions. Those people are hilarious in September and frightening by Halloween because many of them learn nothing. Many of them create threads about things that demonstrably did not happen in a given game either, but such is life on a blog.

That's more or less it for data for now - it was a very calm affair for the most part, but it was nice to see the stadium packed as usual. Now, we turn to face Hawaii, fresh from its loss to Western Kentucky.

Keeping my powder dry.  No need to unholster any fucks or shits last week.  And with John O'Neil retiring I may even have fewer.   Lots of football left.....
