MGoCocktail: Bowling Green 2023

College football is multi-billion dollar industry that some people would think of as indestructible.   The people in control definitely have the best interest of making money in the long term and keeping the money train flowing.  Us unwashed masses believe obviously someone oversees this amazing industry that prints money.

But who oversees college football?

College Presidents?  Gillion Gee was hoping Tressel did not fire him
Head Coaches?  No they can be taken down if necessary
Conference Board of Trustees?  OK maybe, but they only look after their own interests
NCAA- LOL
Odd cabals of TV, streaming executives with only the profitability of the length of the current contract?

I wonder what a person back in 2013 would consider all these changes.  If you had a time machine and talked to  a huge college football  fan (CFF2013) from then.

Me:  Hey I built a time machine I came back to talk to you about the future. Ask anything stocks, winners etc.

CFF2013 : No I don’t want to Gray’s Sports Almanac this and create a paradox.  Let’s talk generalities.  Playoff still four teams?

Me:  No, it’s going to be 12 teams next year 2024

CFF2013  I’m surprised it took that long, 12 seems like too many.  But have to chase those dollars.

CFF2013: Any other huge changes?

Me:  The transfer portal, even non graduate players can transfer schools and have immediate eligibility pretty much no restriction even intra conference.

CFF2013:  That’s wild, so a freshman can play for Michigan one year and Michigan State the next?

Me;  Yes and it’s already happened.  The bigger problem might be stars at mid tier power schools are getting poached by the  elite power houses.  A possible Heisman candidate at Wake jumped to Notre Dame in order to “chase a National title.”

CFF2013: Nice air quotes.  So.. money? Good to see the bag men are still the same.

Me:  Well, yes but no.  NIL went through long story short, it’s ok to play players now over the table.

CFF2013: Well good about time.  But wait, if players can transfer 1 time anywhere and its ok to pay players, isn’t this free agency every year?  How is it regulat….

ME:  CONFERENCE EXPANSION!!

CFF2013:  More? Well as long as I can watch the games on basic cable and they try to put the best Big 10 team available vs the best Pac -12 team available in the Rose Bowl.

This is a self-serving exercise.  Because there is no one to complain to.  The problem is no one is in control of the plane.

I fear it is all too much change at once.  The game is being put in a blender with these rule changes and we don’t know how the changes will interact with another.  NIL is a long time coming and players should be paid, but the outright poaching when combined with the transfer portal isn’t a great development.  It’s pretty horrible Wake lost their Heisman level senior QB and ACC title shot, because Notre Dame needed a QB1.

Playoff expansion may level the playing fiend when it comes to this or it may dilute the only regular season that matters.  Texas beating Alabama was a huge result, but in a 12-game playoff, no one cares.  Both would make the playoffs, now Alabama at least must run the table.

I’m comfortable saying we are addicts, you’re reading a mediocre post on cocktails on a football blog.  However, the real question is the casual fans continue to support the game and the keep the profits flowing.

My 82-year-old dad, 2 degrees from Michigan, is at the putz around the house stage of life.  But on a phone call before East Carolina he asked when the Michigan game was Saturday.  And I had to shudder because I had to tell him, well it’s at noon, but you can’t watch because it is on Peacock.

It’s the shitification of college football as every possible dollar is squeezed from it with no regard for long term viability.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green Ohio was named after Bowling Green Kentucky, which was named after Bowling Green park in Manhattan.  A settler from the Kentucky Bowling Green moved to the Ohio Bowling Green and took the name with him.  The drink was named for the New York park

Bowling Green is a small public park in Lower Manhattan at the foot of Broadway next to the site of the original Dutch fort of New Amsterdam. Built in 1733, originally including a bowling green, it is the oldest public park in New York City and is surrounded by its original 18th century fence. At its northern end is the Charging Bull sculpture. Bowling Green Fence and Park is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. -Wiki
