The Fall and Fall of the Spartan Empire

Submitted by Meeechigan Dan on
For an attosecond, I thought the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire would make good raw material for the following Sparty discussion and a clever title to a diary entry. Then I instantly apologized to my computer screen. Rome fell because it was once great. The Spartan “fall” I am going to discuss is akin to drunk trying to pull himself up only to immediately face plant again. We have a great pleasure before us, Wolverine fans: years of Sparty anguish. Here is the Sparty problem in a nutshell: their frame of reference is that failure is an event measured in geological time. What they fail to understand is that Michigan failure will be measured in Planck time. They had an aberrant year or two in the 60s that they ferociously cling to, like an abused Lena clinging insanely to Thomas Covenant after she had grown old. Now, the Sparty faithful see Michigan reeling from the events of last season and, bolstered by an uptick in recruiting that is being hailed in the local press, believe in their heart of hearts that MSU an UM are in the process of trading places and that Michigan's fall will be long and low. The problem is that they’ve ridden a dinosaur to a horse race. Not the freaky fast, velociraptor type of dinosaur, but a stegosaur, I think. (Given the brain size of the stegosaurus, I think the comparison is a double winner!) It actually is named a Dantoniosaur, and it fundamentally lacks the reflexes necessary to succeed in a Holocene football age. I actually think that Dantonio would have been a damn good coach about 20 years ago. He espouses smashmouth football and power running, but today he is a pale reflection of Jim Tressel; all the stodginess of Tressel without the periodic flash of creativity to keep everyone other than the SEC in a low state of fear. The only solution to his Dantoniosaur-ness is to recruit top ten talent, and that just ain’t gonna happen. Here’s where Michigan sips from the cup of schadenfreude (it’s a shame such a cool word has become clichéd). The Dantoniosaur should bring enough to the game to stay around for a long time, a la John Cooper. And against Lloyd Carr, I think he would have had success, nipping just enough out of our 2 out of 3 winning rate to irritate. But Rodriguez is a whole different animal, and a warm-blooded one at that. Once he gets his wits and his system and his players fine tuned, cold-blooded MSU will represent at most a speed bump, and those extra four star players that have suddenly appeared in their Christmas stocking will melt away. Each year, they’ll be good enough to thump the chest a bit. And 4 out of 5 times, RR will go Oklahoma on them. I can’t wait!

KNOW THY ENEMY It WAS a long time ago, but their run from 1947-1966 was actually pretty good. The beat UM 12 of 18 in that time, won two national championships, and were one of CF's most dominant teams. I think there is a point at which UM fans are going to have to ackowledge that UM's domination here isn't automatic anymore. The fact that UM was pretty much in cruise control the last decade and Sparty couldn't catch up doesn't bode well for them, I'll admit, but now the two teams have completely switched places. I think it takes an awful lot of hubris to just assume that they are going to fall off again and that uM is just going to pop up again. And UM wasn't exactly beating the sheet out of them over the last six years before their victory last season IN ANN ARBOR. I wouldn't be so sure that they are going to play "smash-mouth" football, either. I'm just saying, you know.

"The fact that UM was pretty much in cruise control the last decade and Sparty couldn't catch up doesn't bode well for them, I'll admit, but now the two teams have completely switched places." I was walking along a nice path in the internet and steped in a big pile of BS. Having one bad year, and what is described above couldn't be more far from the truth. As soon as they win most of the games against us in a decade the switch will have taken place. One year does not a coaching career make, Mr. Pessimism. You come off sounding like your the only one who knows that we're doomed, and it's a bit too "Cassandra Complex" for me. (Watch 12 Monkeys) You are like the kid who tries to ruin Christmas before it happens by telling his friends that they will never get what they asked for. I still think you were raped by clowns as a small child. We all know you think the end of the world is upon us, and we should run screaming. No one believes you, so you can just keep up with the delusional prophet gag. At the end of the day, you're just trying to smash any semblence of our hopes for this season and the future of RR in general. Just because you seem to think you know what's going to happen has no bearing on reality. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on for trying to shit on my 4th of July.

I'll tell ya what, old sport: If I can ruin your 4th of July, you have a pretty shitty life. Get over the clown thing--unless you had a bad experience with them when you were young. I did not. I like clowns.

and they are promising. Improved record, improved recruiting can't be argued with. I think you dismiss him far too cavalierly. Of course the sparty M/MSU switching places argument is pure sparty fantasy, but at this exact point in time, there is more evidence on his side than ours. But that will change soon.

It is true that Dantonio has improved MSU thus far. But for how long can he keep it up? He is capitalizing on a weak BigTen, down UofM, better than average HS michigan prospects, a love affair with the media and he dictates the discussion with his own distortions. The only thing more annoying than Spartan fans bragging about future Dantonio Rose Bowls is Spartan fans preaching Dantonio lies and distortions. In example, even little things, such as I hear Sparties brag about how Dantonio does not pursue players once they commit to another team. He just offers them and then doesn't talk to them and lets them choose. (This is so they can compare him favorably to snake oil Rodriquez). However, either Dantonio is lying or about 4 recruits are lying, because I have heard a few recruits say that Dantonio keeps calling after the commit. In example, Dan ONeil said that Dantonio kept calling after he said he was committed to UofM and the new coach. Dantonio really is a scumbag IMHO.

with kids after they commit other schools. Coaches remain in contact with kids they really want until signing day. You're a naive moron if you think there is a single coach in college football that doesn't do this.

redcedar, rivals, socut, mlive articles... Dan ONeil, said in an article that MSU kept recruiting him hard after he committed to Carr and then Rodriquez, even after he reaffirmed his commitment. I have read this about 4 different players. Yet Dantonio claims he backs off once they commit somewhere else. Either Dantonio is lying or at least 4 different kids have lied. Dantonio is a scumbag. The only coach I know who talks smack to an opposing player and then whines about how he doesn't need to disrespect UofM, even though he takes cheap shots at UofM at any little opportunity before he even coached his 1st game at MSU.

Why would we want to "go Oklahoma" on Sparty...why not be proud of who we are and just "go Michigan" on them...after all...in spite of last year's blip...I do beleive we are still the winningest program ever. If anything, we should be the referant in other program's metaphors for success, not the other way round...

This Sparty insolence is really starting to irk me. Hate OSU all you want, but we have to put up with any barbs they might throw at us due to recent history. We also get slammed a lot for basking in past glories. But I'll be damned if I'll let Sparty count their Big Ten Championship eggs before they are hatched. Dantonio has already hit his ceiling Sparty. The future is now for you.

I can't quite see the "Empire" analogy for a program that has been mediocre for 40 years. I liked "Dantoniosaur-ness," though.

Just dropping in to remind you that MSU is undefeated against the velociraptor "RichRod", who we may hereafter refer to as "Richiraptor". The guy is wiping his @$$ with your storied football program, why you want to get behind him so much is completely baffling. But please, continue to indulge in this hilarious affair!!!! As for the argument that Dantonio would have been better against LLLLLoyd Carr than Richiraptor, why is it that Lloyd beat Dantonio, but Richiraptor did not? Hmm you guys are coming up with some great rationales lately! Long Live Rod! GO STATE

MSU isn't going to just fall off. They will be the next Wisonsin. They will be who they will be most of the big ten but at lose least one or two to the big ten's elite. D'antonio is putting a similar scheme and attitude to Barry Alvarez. FYI I'm not a sparty but I'm not going to write off a program because of personal bias. It's really easy to bash both ways. You suck. NO, you suck. See really easy.

However, I don't even see them accomplishing what Wisconsin did in the late 90s: Rose Bowl berths. IMO, they'll always finish behind any combination of UM, PSU, or OSU. The way they can get to Pasadena is to finish 2nd behind a title-game-bound team. What I do see Dantonio doing is changing the program's attitude, which I think will better the UM-MSU rivalry some. Hopefully more 2007-type games will come to be in the next few years.

I could care less about MSU, however i do enjoy reminding them of their loss to Division II GVSU mens basketball and making sure they know that Grand Valley is their rival, not UofM. Yes, it was exhibition. Yes, they mixed up the roster. Yes, they almost lost to them the year prior. Yes, all of MSU's starters played significant time. Yes, they were at home. Yes, i am a child for throwing that in their faces but arguing with a typical State fan usually is as effective as using a spoon to shave. Yes, Izzo has a mangina. http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/110307aae.html
