The offseason is really starting to drag and recruiting is relatively calm after a frenetic start. At times like this, I have only one question: Has Indiana picked up a 2013 commit yet?

Indiana is the lone Big Ten school without a commit.
Almost makes you wish you could play Indiana every year right before the biggest game on your schedule.
... or as your protected, cross-divisional rival, for that matter.

I love the way the whole division thingy broke down.
The bigten is becoming really tough - esp for teams like MSU and UofM that play ND every year.
May be fun to rip on ND, but they are going to be really good for many years to come.
Point being, every team needs a break here and there - can't play all of the good teams every year.
The divisions split up/protected game favors MSU. It mostly comes down to region and recruiting.
There will be years where MSU gets dumped on with cross division tough teams, but here's what we have with the division automatic games:
OSU and UofM were split in different division.
MSU gets UofM. No offense, but I'd rather play UofM on a consistant basis. And MSU players can get up for this game like no other.
PSU and NEB split.
PSU gets a lot of first picks in Pennsylvania recruiting. Neb gets the state of Nebraska. Neb is always relying heavily on imports. Not sure what the draw is in Nebraska aside from football history, which PSU already has - probably more history.
Wisconsin and Iowa split. Iowa is a good program, Wisconsin is better.
Of the remaining teams (not counting MSU), Illinois has the most potential to be a strong program. Purdue is probably second. Neither are in MSU's division.
MSU gets Minny and Northwestern as automatics...and IU as a protected "rivalry":).
Those should all be 9 out of 10.
Dantonio is pulling in some bigtime programs pre-bigten season (Boise, West Virginia, Bama..twice). That might be tough, but the division break down looks to have MSU bowling for decades. And recruiting well for a nice long time.
Michigan State fans constantly bitch that Michigan commits get the "michigan bump" when they commit here. Their unrated QB just got moved up to 4 star. Will they understand the irony, or will they overlook this detail?

NR at this point often means the site has not scouted them- not that they aren't good. When a player commits to a big program (which MSU is) then they likely expedite that process so that they have scouted players commited to top schools.
So the bump up at this stage is mostly a reflection of the tremendous amount of change possible in the early stages. When a player goes unchanged or unranked through multiple rounds of ranking updates and then commits and sees a huge bump you can argue its due to a "bump" but in this case I think its fairer to say its early in the game and the rankings change quickly.
Plus, I tend to agree that recruits to top schools get more hype, and that often translates to a "bump" in rankings that may not always be fair. And because Michigan has a bigger fanbase, and one that follows recruiting so heavily, it makes it more likely our recruits get a higher "bump" than those of many schools.
But rankings are only a reflection of success recruiting- a player won't be any better when they get to campus if they were a 5-star rather than a 4-star- its just that the expectations and class rankigs will be higher.

He already had a 4 from...I think espn's ranking system. Maybe it was a day after that chart came out.
Maybe, he's actually good enough to be a 4.
Or maybe, the rating sites are finally got embarrassed enough by MSU sending half of their sr class and two jr's to the NFL, and back to back 11-win seasons with mediocre class rankings.
Maybe, some MSU players should get a bump. Dantonio is clearly seeing something the recruiting sites are missing. Maybe an MSU recruit should be considered for that majestic star bump.

I agree w/ half your statement. I honestly don't care too much if some recruiting service gave him an extra star. His skillset has not magically improved since last week because he got a fictitious ranking by some guy in an office watching hundreds of hours of film. From the last couple years, MSU's highly ranked recruits has contained more Fred Smiths and Antonio Jeremiahs than Will Gholstons. I don't get too giddy and bogged down with stars. Same can go for basketball (Goran Suton vs. Marquise Gray)
I think basketball recruiting rankings are more accurate because in football you cant expect a true freshman to play right away, there is a ton of strength and conditioning that the player must do to be as good as the experienced ones in college. In basketball, you can expect a true freshman to start if he's a top 25 national player. You wont expect a top O-lineman to start for you as a true freshman against Big Ten D-lineman who are 3rd or 4th year players.
Also there are A LOT less players in basketball than there are in football, which leaves less "diamonds in the rough" type players who havent been rated by the system just because there are so many other players. In basketball there are only 2-4 players in a class usually so it can be more accurate to rate them all.
Just wondering how these are ranked? OSU has a higher average than michigan but they are ranked lower. Wisconsin also has a higher average than iowa but they are ranked lower. Is there a system, or do you just not bother changing it?
18 recruits with an average of 3.82 is > 11 recruits with an average of 3.91.
Once the classes start filling out you get a better idea of the actual class rankings.
