2019 CFB Ultimate Road Trip
The guys who run the Athlon Sports Cover 2 podcast (would highly recommend if folks are looking for more CFB podcast content) recently released a podcast with a clever conceptual game - picking your ultimate 2019 CFB road trip.
The rules are pretty simple:
- 14 CFB weeks in the season and you must see 28 separate teams play over the course of the season - you cannot see a team play twice.
- Everyone "gets" Army-Navy in Week 15, and Week 0 games are folded into/counted as Week 1.
- You can make your picks on whatever criteria you'd like (e.g., desire to see a game at a particular stadium you've never been to), but the 28 separate team rule must be reflected in your final picks.
- There is no budget and travel limitations/burdens are not applicable.
Below are select games for each week of the 2019 CFB schedule that I found appealing (a low bar, intended to generate feedback/perspectives) as options, with my picks in bold. Games are simply ordered as they currently appear on ESPN's CFB Schedule page.
In the interest of killing time now that we are in the dog days of summer, what are others' picks for each week and why? The strategy element is particularly interesting - are there certain games that you are more interested in seeing and therefore willing to sacrifice the opportunity to see those two teams in other scenarios? This issue will dictate your results. To me, there is one particular game this season that substantially swings outcomes for this whole exercise. Interested to see if others pinpoint that particular game as well.

Thoughts / Observations.
- I would really want to see as many rivalry games as possible, and there are some awesome non-conference games lined up this year (Notre Dame at Michigan; LSU at Texas; Notre Dame at Georgia; Texas A&M at Georgia; Oregon vs. Auburn).
- The OSU - Michigan game is obviously my first choice/highest priority game. However, if you're willing to pass on attending the home game where Harbaugh might break the current OSU streak, that really opens up your schedule for flexibility.
- In any formulation of this exercise, you will need to settle and pick "filler games" for a handful of weeks. Weeks 1, 3, 5 and 13 are the filler weeks for me, but at least you could travel to Palo Alto (Week 1) and LA (week 13) while also seeing Rondale Moore and Purdue play what could be a surprising TCU team (week 3) and then watch what should be a very good Utah team host Washington State (week 5).
- Texas A&M and Georgia have ridiculously hard schedules.
- Weeks 3 and 11 are probably the weakest slate of games
- Personally, I am very intrigued by the Big Ten West this year and believe that race will go down to the wire - some really competitive, meaningful football games will be played in November, and Wisconsin's days of running the table in the West are likely over.
- On the whole, the ACC, the Big 12 and the Pac 10 probably have the weakest slate of offerings, although the Pac 12 slate, in my view, is definitely the strongest of those three.
- I have no idea what to expect from the ACC this year - the #2 spot in that conference is there for the taking by pretty much any team (except you, Wake Forest).
- Seeing Clemson (i.e., Trevor Lawrence) play in-person in Death Valley was a priority. He is good.
What say you?
Dammit*, I just realized I'm going to have to root for ND on September 21st.
*A word I've never used on this blog.
Have you ever said, "root for ND" on this blog before?
Nope. That's really a one-off. There's probably 2-3 teams nationwide that I'd be fine with ND wining against in any given year (prior to the UM/ND game), and a 2% chance they play any one of them.
What was that game? Fuck/Marry/Kill?
Alabama
ND
OSU
Not sure it works with football.
Actually, the week 0/1 game of Utah/BYU is usually a very good rivalry game. Have been to that before.
Doesn't matter when it is played, they call it the "Holy War" and leave it all on the field.
That would be my pick for week 1. I'm sure the actual game will be less competitive than a Northwestern vs Stanford but the entire gameday atmosphere will be electric. If Miami vs Florida was at the Swamp I would have considered that one.
Whoever thought that putting Miami vs Florida in Orlando on August 24th is a good idea needs to be turned to soylent green. Either it's going to be hotter than the surface of the sun or it's going to storm its balls off... Or both.
Well, both UF and Miami play home games during September and it's still hot as balls down here then. It's the south, it gets fucking hot down here.
As an Orlando resident I think it's pretty cool to be able to see two big time college programs without having to drive hours.
Just a quick note OP, Texas A&M @ Georgia isn't Non-conference.
Great post, and I think when my son is old enough, we may try to do this one year.
1. Arizona @ Hawai'i - Why not go to Hawaii to end the summer?
2. A&M @ Clemson will be HUGE this year.
3. Oklahoma @ UCLA - This game COULD be the game Chip Kelly got things on track. Also..LA.
4. ND @ Georgia is obvious.
5. NC St @ FSU - Taggart getting things together? NC State a blip last year or for real?
6. MSU @ OSU - Probably a big test for Ryan Day to set expectations for the Bucks all year.
7. Florida @ LSU - Gotta go see LSU at NIGHT
8. Mich @ PSU - White out...could be a really good game in primetime
9. So Car @ Tenn - Tennessee will either be rolling or falling apart at the OL seams
10. TCU @ OK State - Who doesn't want to see a 55-45 game once a year?
11. Stanford @ CO - Colorado is a beautiful state...probably an underwhelming game though.
12. Wisky @ Neb - I hear a game at Nebraska is fantastic.
13. Oregon at ASU - Partying at ASU...in November..both teams might be playing for something as well.
14. Bama @ Auburn
Thanks, yes, that is a bust. Meant Texas A&M at Clemson in Week 2.
Texas A&M has games at Clemson, Georgia and LSU, with homes games against Bama and Auburn. They do have 3 cupcake games though.
The wife and I honeymooned in Hawaii in August many years ago. It was great, but it was hot and humid. I’m thinking a Nov/Dec game in Hawaii when winter is approaching would be better.
Watching Michigan beat down PSU at a white out would be cool, I don't think they're gonna be very good this year. But it'd be tough to pass up the chance to see Michigan (maybe) beat OSU. Even if it is Ryan Day and not Urbs.
In the end I feel like it comes down to going the ND or OSU route for the Michigan game. Obviously The Game is The Game and is ever-so important, but this year ND is another "last game for the foreseeable future" scenario with GameDay and UTL both very likely.
I've posted about my own personal college football trips the last few falls so I won't rehash those right now. But this year I've got the following games booked, not quite a full 14 week schedule but tough to pull that off.
9/7 LSU @ Texas
10/26 ND @ Michigan
11/something LSU @ Ole Miss
Thanksgiving OSU @ Michigan
I've got at least one more to book and it's looking like Texas @ WVU. My goal is to hit every P5 and if I do the WVU game I'll have checked off 3 more boxes.
1) Utah/BYU for sure
2)Stanford/USC to see the coliseum
3) Iowa/Iowa st
4) Auburn/A&M to see that stadium
5) uva/Nd just to do the stadium
6) UGA/TN
7) OU/TEX
8) Oregon/WASH
9) BC/Clem to get that stadium
10) Miami/FSU
11) LSU/Bama (this is tough because I also want to see a game at LSU)
12) wisc/neb
13)pitt/va tech to get in that stadium (I know it’s not quite what it was a decade ago but still)
14) um/osu

1. Arizona @ Hawaii - Location was the only real factor. Some decent games this week, but the teams involved have better matchups later on.
2. Texas A&M @ Clemson - huge nonconference matchup. Let's see how far TAMU is along.
3. Iowa @ Iowa St - Rivalry game. My partner is from Iowa and her family is awesome, so this would be a good one to go to.
4. ND @ Georgia - Hopefully an ND loss.
5. Washington St @ Utah - Same deal as week 1. Some interesting games, but better matchups for those teams in other weeks.
6. Oklahoma St @ Texas Tech - Who doesn't love a shootout?
7. Oklahoma v Texas - No brainer this week. Though Florida-LSU is an interesting one as well.
8. Oregon @ Washington - Two best teams in the Pac 12 North. Really like the Pacific NW.
9. Penn St @ Michigan State - Featured an upset the past couple years. Close to home after a few weeks out West.
10. Miami @ FSU - Teams are not at their peak, but still a rivalry game. And a little vacation before the cold really hits.
11. LSU @ Alabama - I expect Bama to wipe the floor with them, but can't turn down a big matchup from the last 15 years.
12. Wisconsin @ Nebraska - I think the Cornhuskers take over control of the B1G West starting this year.
13. UCLA @ USC - Historic rivalry in Southern California? Count me in.
14. OSU @ Michigan - No brainer.
15. Army v Navy - Great rivalry. Not real big on the military grandeur stuff, but it's always a great game.
Big miss not going for El Assico in week 3.
I did this once. I mean, I picked the games and then drove 23,000 miles and went to all of them.
I highly recommend it if your life allows for it (mine certainly no longer does). Maybe when the kids are grown I can make another round...
I keep the blog active mainly to reminisce about it.
Goal is to find 80 degrees every week. Northern schools early, southern schools late. Then, the Game
- Utah/BYU
- Neb/Colo (Boulder = fun)
- Okla/UCLA (Rose Bowl)
- Oreg/Stan
- NW/Wisc (Madison = fun)
- Ga/Tenn
- USC/ND
- WV/Okla
- Ms St/A&M
- Utah/Wash
- LSU/Bama
- Wake/Clem
- Pitt/VT
- OSU/Mich
My youngest daughter and I went on a bowl game trip last season. She has degrees from Oklahoma State and Purdue. Needless to say, the first two games, in Nashville and Atlanta were not fun at all. Finally, the 3rd game with Oklahoma State in Memphis had the team we were rooting for with a win. The only downside (aside from the losses) was with all the driving between cities (and sitting in traffic after the games) we didn't have nearly enough time or energy to have much fun enjoying what each city had to offer. Still, it was great spending time with my daughter. Once the children grow up and have lives/careers of their own, those opportunities can be few and far between.
Week 1 - Utah at BYU
Week 2 - Nebraska at Colorado
Week 3 - Oklahoma at UCLA
Week 4 - Notre Dame at Georgia
Week 5 - USC at Washington
Week 6 - Auburn at Florida
Week 7 - Florida State at Clemson
Week 8 - Texas A&M at Ole Miss
Week 9 - Penn State at Michigan State
Week 10 - Houston at UCF
Week 11 - LSU at Alabama
Week 12 - Wisconsin at Nebraska
Week 13 - Oklahoma State at West Virginia
Week 14 - Ohio State at Michigan
Texas A&M @ Georgia is an ESS-EE-SEE league game
