WTKA Roundtable 9/1/2022: It's a Good Thing Comment Count

Seth September 1st, 2022 at 10:42 AM

Things discussed:

  • McNamara/McCarthy situation: Don't expect them both back next year, but this year it's better to have two. Previous situations: guy who did it with Stanford and the 49ers did it best. Best-case scenario: McNamara wins the Heisman, goes first overall, and McCarthy returns to lead us to a natty.
  • 1999 Revisionism: The injuries on the OL were a bigger part of that story than the QB competition.
  • Colorado State preview: Wolves in sheep's clothing? (Good one, Craig). They were decent last year because they had Trey McBride (first TE off the board) and that team is almost all gone: one DT and one linebacker are the only guys who were 1st team. They even put the inside linebacker Seth thought was their star behind a 195-pound RS freshman walk-on.
  • Depth Chart: Clever to name 20 starters per side. Mason Graham: he's doing it against Michigan's OL so it's got to be real. Zak Zinter is going to be awesome.
  • Pass rush has to come from the DTs this year. Mullings: if they could spare him from LB (he'll have to start with NHG out) he'd be an RB. Jimmy Rolder? True freshman linebacker is true freshman.
  • Purdue/Penn State and Notre Dame/Ohio State.

The Usual Links:

If this team falls apart it's not because the quarterbacks got mad at each other and threw ketchup on each other's shirts.

Yes, having two QBs who could play is difficult to manage in the era of NIL and transfer portals. But any QB who knows they're good enough to start at their elite school and has multiple years of  eligibility left should also realize they're one injury away from taking over full time.

I guess I am a lot less concerned about the quarterback situation than most. We have two excellent QBs and can have a great season with either one of them starting or if both continue to alternate. I am okay with Harbaugh’s plan until it works itself out.
