WTKA Roundtable 8/8/2019: A Night Without Stars Comment Count

Seth August 9th, 2019 at 7:29 AM

Things discussed:

  • Chinese revolutionary poetry for Noah Webb
  • Don Brown: Going to have more in the toolbag next year
  • Ten deep on the DL? Carlo Kemp major leap would change the profile of the defense. Concern is last year Kemp had no pass rush, Dwumfour had no run defense
  • LBs: McGrone is the guy you want to break through. Hard to judge the MLBs because Bush played almost all snaps last year.
  • Mike Sainristil complicates our hype for Giles Jackson
  • Rankings are important but if you pay enough attention you can tell which guys will defy those rankings.
  • Freshmen: Turner had good offers not good rankings, came in at 180 and would be great if he can play. Solomon was a late flip from Miami (YTM) who's apprenticing at Viper.
  • Michael Barrett is back to viper, and playing some kick returner
  • Coach quotes: It's Gattis's offense. You can tell because there's no fullback. Give Shea more reads. Brown is going to solve his problems with aggression.
  • 38 minutes: Really bad for 19 minutes against ND and OSU.
  • MSU: Drying up. Getting killed in-state because of Blackwell, killed in Ohio with Kentucky and Cincy. They've been a statistical .500 team going back to 2016.
  • Brian on OSU: long-term, thinks Day is a mistake. All their marbles are on Fields.
  • Gattis: deepest position is running back? Haskins having a good camp, BVS, they're five deep.

I am not really interested in further criticism of Don Brown because it is going to come down to proving it on the field and everyone knows it. Personally, I don't know how the man can sleep at night knowing what happened at OSU and that he needs to hear about and think about it for an entire year before he can fix it. That would drive me crazy.

But I just cannot accept the 38 minutes rationalization. I get that he's got to say something and that is probably the best thing he can say. I also don't know exactly what 19 minutes he's pinpointed against OSU, maybe the last 4 of the first half and all of the 3rd quarter? In football, when you say we were only bad for a little bit but it was that little bit that gave the opponent a lead that they could sit on that rings pretty hollow. Did anyone get the impression that the Michigan D was ever really stopping OSU? I did not. Also, ND came out with a plan, that plan put them up 21-3 after 4 possessions. Game over. Lucky? Maybe but that's a lot of luck to wave away.

In Brown's defense, the main problem all season was that Michigan seemed content to play grab ass for 3 quarters, assuming the defense would keep it close, hoping to wear the opponent down and win it in the 4th. Just look at the big wins--the PSU game was 14-0 with one minute left in the 3rd quarter, MSU 7-0 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd, the Wisconsin game was 13-7 at half and only 21-7 going into the 4th. They all ended up looking like blowouts because of 4th quarter scoring largely aided by the defense.

If Brown's defense had any issues, the offense never had their back. You can't play modern football with that approach. Even Alabama and Clemson have bad halves on defense.

Kemp seems like an all-around great guy who will go places in life, but I really can't see him making a big leap. He has been hyped before. I hope the bigger guys at that position pan out.

Can someone please let Craig Ross know that it's Ringo Starr, not George Harrison, shouting "I've got blisters on my fingers!" at the end of Helter Skelter? I can understand Brian not knowing this, given his deplorable opinion of The Beatles, but Craig? Come on, man. Is he holding that much of a grudge for John calling Chairman Mao out? NOT EVERYONE SHARES YOUR LOVE OF COMMUNISM OK CRAIG???? Thanks.
