WTKA Roundtable 7/6/2023: The Next Four Questions Comment Count

Seth July 6th, 2023 at 3:00 PM

Things Discussed:

  • Just me (Seth) today with Ira & Sam and we have Sam answer the HTTV (now available as a PDF) Roundtable questions.
  • HTTV: the not a PDF? There's a paper shortage preventing us from printing as many as we need. I have enough to take care of all of the pre-orders. I don't have enough to put print copies on sale right now.
  • I may in 3 weeks. I will have a Kindle Edition in a few weeks. In fact it'll be submitted to Kindle in a few days.
  • NIL: Where's Michigan at? Sam thinks they're coming in under their hopes. Not going to raise what OSU is raising. Will raise more.
  • Charitable? Ira's dad chimes in. Seth: the main issue is you can't pay more than market value, so you can't move enough $NIL through a 501(c)(3).
  • Maryland Talk: That's Sam's pick for most underrated Michigan opponent. We also talk PSU and Minnesota.
  • Michigan center: I love Drake Nugent, Sam says Raheem Anderson is really coming on, and don't count him out.
  • Cade at Iowa: Good fit, he'll do fine, their pass protection has deteriorated lately. If All is healthy they can TE like always.
  • How do you get over the CFP hump? QB: You have to play an NFL game because you're playing against NFL defenses.
  • Will Harbaugh flirt with the NFL again? Yes. That's just how it's going to be here.
  • Jim, if you want to go to the NFL we will support you but the deal is you have to give us your son. Harbaugh has us set up if he leaves: Moore is ready to be HC at this level, and he has a staff: Bellamy, Hart, Clinkscale are Michigan guys more than they're Harbaugh guys.
  • Season prediction: Who's got it better than us?

Harbaugh has us set up if he leaves? after this season.. what happens if he doesn't and Sherrone Moore takes a HC gig then a year or two later Harbaugh leaves? Are we just assuming Moore comes back to Michigan?

Easy for me to say I'd do that if I were Moore but who knows.

That timescale works for Michigan, but there is a big assumption Moore is successful in that duration. The other issue is if we wait too long and Moore achieves great success at a peer program.

The most likely situation is that Moore is only okay as head coach of a P5 like Mizzou or something. It may be hard to hire him in that situation.

Every year people say "this is the year that Maryland gives the big dogs trouble" and they never do. I'll believe it when I see it from them, but this seems kinda like their make or break year with it being Taulia's last season

Kind of depends on how you define "trouble."  They gave us and OSU pretty good games last year.  They were a 2 point conversion from beating OSU in 2018 (Geez, was that really 5 years ago?).  They do tend to explode against winnable teams (see Iowa last year).  They're probably more of the TeamCHAOS of the B1G than Indiana these days.

I know it’s a slow time for things to talk about in college sports, but i’m sorry, i can’t listen to the NIL conversation for the 19,000th time.  Would rather listen to just about anything else at this point.

Seth repeatedly saying “Maryland” when he meant “Minnesota” is all I need to not fear the Gophers.  I live in downtown Minneapolis and there has been no buzz.

Did something change with the way the video was posted to Twitter? This is the first time ever that Twitter has tried to force me to log in or create an account to watch the video.

I don't to make too big a deal of it, but how can we better prepare for the equivalent of TCU next year? By not being so arrogant in our preparation that we become convinced we can run it down their throats no matter what, regardless of what their obvious game-plan is.

I'm serious. If Harbaugh's teams have one problem it's a failure to adapt to the actual game they're seeing out of a conviction that their pre-game strategy will work if they just give it enough time. From the infamous Army game 4 years ago (also Iowa, that same year), to TCU last year, it can be infuriating.

Also, the issue you discussed on the show of how Michigan should structure its game-plan around JJ — and why it didn't do what we could have expected them to do with him last year — raises similar questions. That is, all the analysts in the world can suggest what Harbaugh should do with JJ. But is he going to follow that analysis? Unlikely ...

Spot on Dennis.

This is the next spot where Harbaugh -- and his staff, but let's face it, really Harbaugh -- need to improve and jump to the next level. He has to finally let go of the Michigan mentality that has persisted from Bo through to Lloyd and now to Jim. The idea that "we're going to do what we do and you can try to stop us" works great, until it doesn't.

With a month to prepare, there is a far greater likelihood that an opponent, especially one of CFP caliber, will be able to stop the primary offensive plan -- especially when it's obvious what that primary plan is going to be. And in Michigan's case, under Bo, under Lloyd, and under Jim, it's been obvious.

Except for the 2007 Cap One Bowl. There's the evidence. Keep the defense off-balance and profit.

We have the team to hang with anyone this year. When the MGoRadio folks talk about the QB having an NFL game in the CFP, I counter by saying the coaches have to call an NFL-caliber game, too. Everything is on the table. Break tendencies. Make the plays and counters to those plays effectively flow, keeping the defense actually guessing about Michigan will do for once. That's the next step, and it's on the coaches. They are the ones that need the "Beat Georgia" segments during preparation.
