WTKA Roundtable 5/9/2019: Maybe It Smells Good Comment Count

Note: I did my best to remove the buzzing. –seth

Things discussed:

  • The South Africa trip: given the structure we're in, it's a good thing Michigan is doing, for the players and for Michigan.
  • Roster review: Not appreciating Nico Collins enough.
  • Defensive tackle definitely the biggest concern. Think Dax can handle Rover.
  • Indiana and Ohio State abused Michigan's third corner and that was true. Now with two fewer corners everyone's going to be going after us there.
  • College basketball trial: A couple of more convictions. Dawkins is contending they weren't bribing AAU coaches because you want to pay the players.
  • Craig Ross recalls the Jai Eugene recruitment: told Fred Jackson they were gonna take care of his baby, mom got a house, dad got out of jail…Jackson says "Okay kid, go to LSU."
  • Coaches know but don't tell. Lloyd knew, Bo knew—you don't talk because it will just hurt your program. Remember the top-100 guy who was crying because if he couldn't sign with Bama he would be out life-changing money.
  • Dawkins types offer to "help" with the recruitment of kids in return for coach steering kid to agent.
  • Easiest fix: give them image rights and let them sign with NCAA-approved agents.
  • NCAA has on multiple occasions (Crawford/McGary) has taken away a kid's education for no reason.
  • Franz Wagner: assume Michigan lands him, what is he? A 6'7" version of Poole. Sam says he makes plays for others too.

Soon to be sophomore at UF Chris Steele, a former top 100 recruit, is now in the transfer portal and could provide some depth at CB or help in the slot.  Why not take a run at him?

Really?  Still on the whole McGary thing?  He was a scholarship athlete and at the time it was illegal to smoke pot.  No doubt the punishment was too harsh but he knew he shouldn’t do it and still did.  He went on to serve further suspensions in the NBA after saying he learned his lesson.  McGary was not the sharpest guy in the room, let’s move on.

The fact that he is stupid is irrelevant to the fact that the law is stupid, and also irrelevant to the fact that the NCAA is under no obligation to mirror that law in their internal policy.

We live in a country with the highest incarceration rate in the world, largely because of our stupid ass drug laws. It's a good thing to keep bitching about this stuff.

You can keep bitching about it but the NBA has the same rule, the NCAA has already changed the punishment and obviously now it is legal for the average citizen.  We live in a world where congress wastes millions of dollars on MLB players using PEDs, the FBI investigates paying high school and college athletes.  Ironically none of these things are actually illegal, yet our government has wasted a lot of money policing it.  The difference is what he did actually was illegal.  You can complain about the stupid law, but it was a law.  Oh and our prisons aren't full because of pot smokers.

So opposing offenses are now going to get after our DTs and CBs, and test our true frosh safety.  We also have question marks at DE and linebacker.  Viper is OK, I guess?

I'm guessing a lot of these positions are no longer strengths, but we're not going to be fielding guys with their heads screwed on backwards.  We'll probably be OK until OSU, at which point the clock strikes midnight on Brown's gum-and-duct-tape magic.

We are going go have to score on OSU this time.

So last week Ed Ross or someone said that it was the last week of MGoBlog roundtable and no one corrected him.  I was surprised yesterday to see MGoBlog Round table on the Michigan Insider Podcast.   Neither of the Eds showed up because they thought they were done.  Weird that I was under the same impression as the Eds.

I keep seeing notes everywhere in regards to Franz and people feeling confident we're going to land him but it just seems like, the longer this drags out, the more likely he is to stay in Germany. I think I heard he's supposed to make a decision by early June at the absolute latest. Curious for those that are in the know, why is that date so far out? I'm assuming it has something to do with Alba and their timing.

I'm sure it's confirmation bias but anytime it drags out, it seems we lose out on players. We seem to get commitments mostly right after a visit.

Brian and Sam talking about the current state of the recruiting world is Great content.

They seem to have a great feel for the ethics of paying college athletes. This is the kind of conversation I want to hear more of.
