WTKA Roundtable 10/5/2023: So That's the Excuse Comment Count

Seth October 5th, 2023 at 11:00 AM

Things Discussed:

  • Urban Meyer: The next coach of Michigan Sta….lol. Maybe he was on the same drugs as the MSU fans?
  • Other MSU coaching candidates they're never going to get.
  • Michigan offense vs Nebraska: Neb's DT is great, M's performance on the ground was real.
  • Read options: reps are helping. It's like a PG in basketball; you have to read the edge's intent not his positioning.
  • Seth: They can stretch you so many ways, because you're coming down on Max Bredeson crossing the formation and your FS has to get way high to be over Roman Wilson and they slice you up in the mid-range.
  • Ran an RPO!
  • Henderson is good at the guard things.
  • Edwards: concerted effort to get him right. Think it will happen.
  • Guys who wear numbers in the 40s. Max Bredeson!
  • MULLINGS! DeVeon Smith?
  • Next year's OL, left to right: Gentry, El-Hadi, Crippen, Anderson, Hinton/Persi?
  • Jenkins: Got him blocked ONE TIME.
  • Defense: A couple of those sacks need a Corcoran's backup discount. One thing that doesn't need a discount: Derrick Moore's size and dip.
  • DEs need to practice their coverage—Harrell and McGregor are better at it, Moore and Stewart were rough.
  • Secondary concerns: Sainristil was a little hurt. Rod Moore at nickel is fine—he was doing some Peppers things. Will Johnson struggled; need to see him this week vs Minnesota's good WR. Notable that Rod Moore is on the field up 45-0—that says he's the Donovan Edwards, needs snaps.
  • Minnesota: One good receiver, one really bad guard spot. Defense are just guys except don't throw it near #27.
  • Theory of Iowa: the starter wants to throw short, the backup wants to throw long.

It says something that we're spending significant time in Week 6 talking about the likely OL-FB-RB lineups for next season--and everything is still on the table for this season.

Who's got it better than us.

FAAAAAARRRRR too early to even think about next year....but.....to say it will be a challenging rebuilding year is vastly understating it.  That OL looks decent, but a massive turnover from the past few years with so many new guys moving into the lineup.  Combine that with Corum & Johnson leaving and the likely departure of JJ, Edwards, and Wilson?  Oh...and how about a schedule that is significantly more challenging than the past two years?

That being said....here's one wild hot take that is highly improbable - it isn't a sure thing JJ leaves for the NFL next year.  I listen to a few national CFB/NFL shows and whenever they rattle off the top draft QB prospects they don't even mention him among the first 5-6 guys (Williams, Maye, Ewers, Sanders, Travis, Penix, Nix, Leary, etc.).  If JJ is sitting outside the top group of QBs while raking in the NIL and having a shot at a Heisman invite as a senior....might he stay?!?  (Okay....almost certainly not....but one can dream!)

Probably reading into it too much but the body language of Rod Moore leaving the field in Lincoln was significantly different that the rest of his teammates post-victory.  Hopefully he gets the reps and mojo back to where everyone expected it would be at this point in the season.
