Things Discussed

  • Lawrence Marshall's tipped pass
  • Marshall thinks Aidan Hutchinson will be an All-American
  • Hutchinson on expectations
  • Zach Gentry used to be a quarterback. People forget that.

[After THE JUMP: Wolverbear. Not really, it's just a transcription.]

Lawrence Marshall

So you saved the game on that — you see the TV network feed of that, getting your hand up?

“I don’t wanna say I saved the game, it was just a big play in the game.”

What happened on that play? Just stuck your paw up there?

“Offensive guard came at me, I read it was pass and coach (Greg) Mattison always says, ‘Get your hands up.’ I got my hands up and got a piece of the ball. Wish I had got the pick, but I ain’t get it.”

Are you back to 100 percent?

“Yes I am.”

What have you seen from Aidan Hutchinson this year?

“Oh my god, Aidan, from the first day until now, making a huge jump. That kid will be an All-American here. I don’t wanna speak too fast, let me slow it down a little bit, but he’ll be an All-American by the time he’s finished.”

Rashan (Gary) was saying that Aidan’s further along at the same point. You saw Rashan when he was a freshman, so

“He just, he goes hard. He’s strong, he goes hard, he’s smart. Like he really understands football. Like a lot of freshmen, when they come in, they really don’t understand the adjustments from high school to college. He really understands football.”

Why didn’t you go, or look, consider anywhere else for your fifth year after you hadn’t started yet?

“I felt like Mo Hurst left, the spot was open and I wasn’t gonna walk away from something that — I knew I could play here. A lot of guys second-guess their skills and they go somewhere else, like a lower division. I feel like I could play here at Michigan, that’s what I did.”

Zach Gentry

What kind of poise does Dylan (McCaffrey) bring to the table?

“Dylan, one thing that stood out to me from even Week 1, at Notre Dame, he came in the huddle when Shea was cramping up and right away, you could tell, he brought confidence into the huddle. It was, he hadn’t skipped a beat, completed some passes, did what he needed to do. That was really impressive. He came in, just kinda took command of the huddle. And he’s been like that ever since. You can never tell if he’s nervous, he talks really steady and just goes in and makes plays.”

Do you still throw in practice?

“A little bit. I mean like, a little bit in warm-ups, when we’re getting ready for practice.”

You still have it?

“Oh yeah.”

(Laughs)

“I still enjoy throwing it. Kinda mess around a little bit, but nothing too serious.”

Any trick play ideas involving passing?

“I mean, I pitch them. We’ll see. I’m in a whole nother realm now, I’m a blocker and a pass-catcher.”

How far can you throw it?

“How far?”

Yeah, have you ever tried to just

“Man, I don’t know. I’d probably tear my labrum if I tried to throw that far right now. I know I threw like 70 yards in high school.”

(Joe) Milton I think throws 80 … how different are Dylan and Joe’s arms?

“They both have really strong arms, really quick releases, too. I’d say there’s probably more similarities than differences there, between the two arms. Lotta arm strength, two really talented quarterbacks. Impressive every day in practice.”

Not to disparage anybody, but this quarterback room is pretty deep. How comfortable is this offense now that you’ve gotten Shea and Dylan?

“Yeah, we’re comfortable no matter who’s in the game, like I said, Dylan came in and he was confident and we believe in him. When (Brandon) Peters comes in, he’s confident, he knows he can do it. And so, definitely a good feeling knowing that no matter what, we’re gonna have a commanding presence in the huddle and somebody who can execute.”

Is that a different feeling?

“Well, it’s a different feeling, but it’s a nice feeling.”

Aidan Hutchinson

What have you picked up from (Rashan Gary)?

“A lot of little stuff. I’d always whisper to him, ask him some questions about technique or even the technique for the play and stuff like that. He’s done a lot for me.”

Do you guys hang out outside of football, at all?

“I’ve seen him a few times, but no, we haven’t hung out.”

Lawrence said you’re gonna be an All-American — Lawrence Marshall said that. To hear a guy say that about you — you’ve played in four games — I mean, to hear a guy say that kind of stuff about you, what is it like?

“That’s cool, but I have a lot to work on.”

Does your dad remind you that he’s already an All-American?

“Oh yeah, all the time.”

Has he set the bar — in your mind, has he set the bar high for you?

“I’ve set the bar high for myself, I think. Obviously him being an All-American here, obviously I know there’s a high standard for me, I think, but I set my own expectation for myself, and I set the bar for myself.”

That feeling stepping out there, Notre Dame Stadium, what was that like, what was going through your mind?

“Well actually, my first play, it was like — Rashan was tired, he ran off the field, and I went in there real fast. To be honest, I didn’t even know the play. I didn’t get the call in time, so I was freaking out a little bit. And yeah, so my first play wasn’t ideal, but it was definitely pretty cool being out there.”

What’s it been like working with coach Mattison, what makes him a good coach?

“I think he really just focuses on the little things. Like, we get marked down for a bad play — even if we make the play, but it’s still a bad play, you can take a bad first step. So it’s so many little things that he really focuses on.”

First year of school, how much is your head still spinning?

“Yeah, during camp it was pretty bad. We had school and camp going on, that was probably the worst, but it’s starting to calm down a little.”

Kwity (Paye) said he’s preparing for when Chase (Winovich) and Rashan aren’t gonna be here. Do you feel like you’re doing the same right now?

“Yeah, especially, I would say last game against Nebraska, me and Kwity were in there a lot. Yeah, that was a little bit preparation, I think, for when they’re gone.”

You said you have such high expectations, what are the things that you’re like, ‘Alright, I gotta get better here, here and here with?’

“Honestly all aspects of my game. Just — I need to work on everything all around. … You can’t be perfect here, obviously, at the collegiate level, so … all the aspects of the game.”

Has this been what you thought it’d be? Your dad played at Michigan, you grew up a fan

“Yeah. The plan’s going the way it’s supposed to go so far, so yeah.”

I remember watching Hutchinson’s father play.  Great motor.  Strong player.  When I saw this tall, fairly skinny recruit, I wondered how he might compare.  Wow, he has added bulk, has his dad’s motor (almost) and has played far better than I ever imagined he would as a freshman or even sophomore.  Has a chance to be a special player.

Hutchinson is another very good example of why the last recruiting class was so underrated.  He is one of the very pleasant surprises though with this class as far as early playing time.  Most people were projecting other guys to get earlier PT.

Good reminders, after a few of the other legacy's haven't panned out or walk-ons such as Wangler, it's easy to forget and just think, oh an M loving legacy, their dad was great, cool.

I honestly had thought he was a 3 star mid class, ty for correcting. That and who paid super attention to DL recruits with the line we have currently, most figure we've got a year before we need to know them.

Why didn’t you go, or look, consider anywhere else for your fifth year after you hadn’t started yet?

Even if the sentiment of the question was supposed to focus on Marshall staying for his fifth year and contributing, who the hell poses a question worded like that?

Hutchinson looks like a strong kid -- huge and lean for a freshman. Not to draw any unsavory comparisons, but he looks like a Bosa brother in that pic of Metellus's return.
