Analysis: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Okay, so let’s just say the Ice Devils don’t have a ton after their first line. Holy fish! I haven’t seen that sort of slick puck movement and off-puck player movement since…the Hensick/Porter days? It’s only one game and also opponent dependent, but these dudes look like they can play! Michigan got anywhere they wanted on the ice starting on the first shift of the game. The Beecher-Lambert-Brisson line popped right away. Kent Johnson (4 assists) and Matty Beniers (2 goals) are as skilled as I’ve seen for a third line. Van Whye’s line with Raabe and Moyle produced pressure and an early goal. Bordeleau skated around the entire city of Tempe…multiple times. Granowicz finished a tap-in. There were five even strength goals and there could have been more.

Analysis: Defensemen: ACTIVATED. Cam York looked Hughesian with the puck, breaking it out, entering in, creating chances, moving off-puck for open looks. Owen Power (1 G, 2A) looked the part, too. He’s special. Blankenburg (1G, 1A) led a rush, broke the puck out. The defense is stacked. Summers, Pehrson, and Truscott all looked solid, as well. The DZTOs were kept to a minimum. Everyone seemed to hustle back after losing the puck (which rarely happened). There were eight total points (including three goals) from four different defensemen. This was a domination and demolition.

Analysis: This power play looked insane. It was ridiculously deep. The puck moved…everywhere. Tic-tac-toe passing abounded. Beecher is credited with the first goal, although it appears it should be Bordeleau’s because his pass looked like it deflected off of an Ice Devil skate. Blankenburg sniped another one in the second period. Finally, there was an Owen Power Play Goal! He finished an open net after tremendous puck AND player movement. This power play looks like it could COULD (small sample size) rival that of CCM + Werenski. They only time they didn’t score was after Cam York took a penalty for moving a stray stick out of his way. /shrug

Michigan did take seven penalties. If you want to find a nit to pick, that would be it. They did, however, create THREE breakaways whilst down a skater! Hahaha. The Ice Devils finally finished on their last man advantage, spoiling Mann’s shutout. ASU did look dangerous from time to time in their 1-3-1, moving the puck and getting a few open shots, but that was to be expected with their high end top line. Michigan still probably had more and better chances on the Ice Devils power plays. I’m not sure what to even say about that.

When called upon, Mann was still there (James Coller)

Analysis: Strauss Mann started in net. Surprise! Michigan basically had the puck the entire game –even on the PK- so, he didn’t have a ton to do other than make a great save every once in a blue moon when there was a stray turnover in the neutral zone or offensive end. He ended up making a handful of impressive saves in traffic, a couple more on the PK, and one filthy shutdown of Johnny Walker on a breakaway. He didn’t really have too much else to do. Oh, I guess he gave up a deflected power play goal in the last couple minutes. Oh well.

Analysis: LOL Michigan had three penalty kill breakaways! And scored on none of them! They could have easily had 10+ goals.

Michigan gave up a couple OMRs, including a 2-0. Mann shut down Walker on that chance…just to show off. That’s going to happen when you play this open. I can live with it when you create those kinds of chances in the offensive end all game. And you have a Mann in net.

Yeah, was following on Twitter and sounded like a blast.  As always, it feels weird watching games right now and who knows how long they keep playing, but glad they looked good.

I certainly enjoyed watching these guys - they looked amazing. The BTN+ stream though? Yikes. Audio kept dropping out, there was no overlay for time remaining or any stats at all. Very rough. Is it always like this with their broadcast of hockey games?

Great win. Time will tell if this ASU hockey team is the equivalent of 2020 Minnesota football, but on paper they should be a solid team. Hopefully Mel's battle station is fully operational
