Hello From The Distant Future: Myles Rowser Comment Count

Michigan picked up their second commit of the 2022 class yesterday, safety Myles Rowser, who played his first two years of high school ball at Belleville and will finish at Detroit King. He'll reunite with older brother Andre Seldon, an incoming freshman from Belleville at cornerback, when he arrives in Ann Arbor. While you'd believe Michigan was the obvious destination from the get-go, that apparently wasn't always the case, Roswer told 247's Allen Trieu:

While it may have seemed like Michigan was the obvious choice with his brother signed, Rowser admits he did not grow up a fan of the Wolverines.

"To be honest, I used to like Michigan State when I was younger," he said. "I did watch Michigan, but it was when I first entered high school that it popped in my head that I might want to go there."

State has yet to come forth with a scholarship, an interesting choice given Rowser chose Michigan over early offers from Florida, Florida State, Iowa State, Nebraska, Penn State, and Tennessee, among others. He joins Alex VanSumeren, who also has an older brother (Ben VanSumeren) on the team, in M's 2022 class.

It's too early for 2022 rankings beyond some cursory elite prospect lists that Rowser didn't make. The early offer sheet and scouting reports are indicative of a four-star prospect, as is the film, in my opinion.

One reason Rowser should rank relatively high is his size; yes, he's already bigger than his brother. He's listed at 5'11" and 170-175 on Rivals/247 and measured in officially at 5'9.5", 167 at an Opening regional last March. He's young enough that it's reasonable to expect him to add a fair amount of size, including potentially a couple extra inches of height, before he reaches campus. On film, he looks every bit the part of a Don Brown safety.

SCOUTING

When you start as a freshman in the same defensive backfield as your Michigan commit older brother, you're going to draw some attention. Roswer started getting attention as a camp participant after his freshman year, starting when 247's Allen Trieu named him among the top performers at the Rising Stars Showcase:

Belleville freshman Myles Rowser started as a freshman for the Tigers and already has a Western Michigan offer. For a younger kid, he has good size already as well as cover skills.

At the same event, The Wolverine's Brandon Brown noted Rowser "is already bigger than his older brother and has the the long, rangy build you love to see in young defensive backs."

Considering Rowser is thought of as a safety prospect—and plays safety in high school—it's notable that Brown (and Rivals writ large) projected him as a cornerback at the Rivals Cincinnati camp:

Rowser is just a freshman but he already has a nice looking build for a cornerback. He's listed as an athlete but will almost certainly be labeled as a true cornerback before too long. The 5-10, 175-pounder is Michigan commit Andre Seldon's younger brother and took the camp very seriously from the very beginning with big bro. The pair warmed up together and went through some positional drills while just about everyone else stood on the sideline and chilled.

By that point in the spring, Rowser had already been offered by Michigan.

There's evidence Rowser could make it at corner or at least be an excellent cover safety. He again stood out to Trieu at the Opening regional in Ohio:

Belleville freshman Myles Rowser was very good today, getting his hands on several passes including a great pick.

His coverage skills also stood out to Rivals's Josh Helmholdt at the Lindenwood Mega Camp:

Another young cornerback that had a great day at Lindenwood was Belleville (Mich.) 2022 standout Myles Rowser, who used his length to get his hands on nearly every pass that was thrown his direction.

While Belleville's excellent secondary wasn't tested much when Trieu scouted their game last fall against Dearborn, Rowser got to show off another aspect of his game:

2022 safety Myles Rowser is a willing run stopper who is aggressive, but again, we only got to see glimpses of this with how dominant the defense was.

His willingness and ability to come up and stick a ball-carrier is apparent on his sophomore tape.

In the post-commitment article, Trieu mentioned run support again, and Rowser said the coaches have discussed his positional versatility:

At 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, he has shown excellent hitting and tackling ability in the box, but has also gone to camps and shown his coverage skills in several settings. That versatility is something the Wolverine staff has spoken to him about.

"They said I fit in well and with everything I do, I'd be able to play different positions in the secondary," he said. "My primary position is safety but I can move around."

As safeties are increasingly asked to line head-up on receivers in coverage, Rowser looks like an ideal modern player at the position; he appears to be a sure, willing tackler, and he covers well enough to be utilized as a nickel/dime. This is a really nice early pickup.

OFFERS

Roswer picked Michigan over Florida, Florida State, Iowa State, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Kent State, Kentucky, Maryland, Memphis, Minnesota, Toledo, West Virginia, and Western Michigan. Both 247 and Rivals list Ohio State as showing interest without putting forth an offer. That's an impressive spread of offers for such a young prospect; while perhaps not a national talent, he should emerge as one of the more coveted players in the Midwest.

HIGH SCHOOL

The relevant part for recruiting purposes, at least for now, is that Michigan recruited Rowser while he was at Belleville, an emerging in-state power with former Cass Tech assistant Jermain Crowell at the helm. Every three-star-or-better recruit from Belleville in the Rivals database, which dates back to the class of 2002, is from the class of 2017 or younger. That includes Seldon, 2019 four-star MSU signees CB Julian Barnett and OT Devontae Dobbs, and uncommitted 2021s DT Damon Payne and LB Jamari Buddin.

Michigan has offered both 2021 prospects; they're the expected destination for Buddin, a top-300-ish four-star, and in a large pack of programs chasing Payne, the state's top prospect who's lurking on the fringe of five-star status.

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Will play safety, and probably quite well down the road. We've seen little to nothing of the players who'll still be on the roster when Rowser arrives, so projecting a path to playing time doesn't feel like a worthwhile exercise. Even in the event Don Brown isn't the defensive coordinator in a few years, Rowser's coverage ability and versatility should make him a fit in most any system.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

It has Myles Rowser in it.

2022 could be a special class at defensive back if UM is able to land Will Johnson, Keon Sabb, and Jaedon Gould to go along with Rowser.

Allen Trieu was on with Sam Webb this morning and gave his take on Myles. Said if they'd ranked the 2022 kids beyond the top 100, he would have definitely made in the top 150 and should most likely end up a 4-star for them. Said he is right there 1a and 1b for the top kid in the state right now for his class. Was impressed with him all around and mentioned him getting into a talented Belleville secondary and starting as a young guy when they had a lot of talent in front of him. Sounds like a great prospect to help AVS kick off the 2022 class, especially in the state.

does it matter?  This site and messageboard spends 95% of Dwumfour mentions about him not being an impact player or more than just "a guy".  Kemp returns, Speight is there, Michigan is likely to get 2 DTs from transfers, has 1 very high ceiling true sophmore in Hinton, and 1 very high ceiling RS Freshman in Smith.
