Hello. Comment voting is back. As as often the case with these things, I just had to do something entirely different to get it to work. Once I modified the approach it was easy, which… computers, man.

The graying out and highlighting are still a work in progress, but we have restored the status quo ante bellum, pre-slashcomments. I'll probably move the voting thing to the right, but I figured I'd let people get a grasp on the new/old status quo before making further changes.

The system:

You need 100 points to vote and start threads. As per before. No change there.

Upvoting is free and provides two points to the upvoted user. Someone posted something you like. Hurray!

Downvoting costs a point and subtracts a point from the downvoted user. Finally: something to spend your points on. It costs a point to downvote a guy in an effort to mitigate the echo-chamber effect; downvoting is not supposed to be disagreement. It also hurts the downvoted user less than upvoting helps him an effort to only excise folks who get more than two-thirds of the site on their bad side. If this is you… I cannot help you.

THERE IS NO LIMIT. bwahahahahahaha (there should probably be a limit. working on that.)

Don't get why some people who have been posting, regularly and good posts at that, might have 100 grand or a million negative points, anyway something that ensures they'll never be on the right side of zero ever again.  Shouldn't they get a clean slate with a new system?

Basically the mods have the power to do that. It just means the person melted down in some probably offensive or personal way, but not in such a way as to warrant a ban. It really just means that they can't post threads, vote, or edit anything.

The mods also have to power to restore points or bestow a clean slate. How long one spends in Bolivia (a.k.a. Oblivion) presumably depends on how you behave there (and what you did in the first place), and I imagine you can appeal to the mods after a while. I suspect most people wanting a clean slate just start a new account, although if you have an early-ish join date it sucks to have to change your account. [I changed mine due to a old bug that Brian acknowledged but never fixed, which is fine.]

NOTE: If you find yourself wondering why you keep getting inexplicable downvotes, you might consider editing your signature to remove the blank line returns in it...

I suppose I don't have enough Mgopoints to even worry about such things but I guess I'll suggest it anyway.  I thought it might be nifty if you could get the points back you spent on a downvote if enough other members downvoted the same comment, because surely that would mean that it must be warranted right?  Or would that lead to  a  greater evil such as MgoGang violence on some poor unfortunate soul?

I was a moderator of a discussion board and went through a lot of the same BS Brian has recently. I have lurked on this board for about a year without registering. I didn't need the grief although I thought about registering to express my sympathies to the board moderators. I decided to take a chance with the voting system in place since it already seems to be helping. I wish I had this on the board I moderated.

I have a lot of respect for the people who put in the time to run these boards. People don't realize the time investment necessary to deal with day to day issues much less to add content. I have always felt the board owner has the right to run the board the way he wants. If you don't like his policies you can politely disagree or leave. I understood Brian's comment about always feeling like someone was going to confront you. I felt threatened too. The owner shouldn't have to deal with it but I've seen it happen over and over on other boards. I hope this system works and I give my thanks to all the moderators. This board is a great resource and appreciated.
