OT: the final word on the Boise St debate

Submitted by dnak438 on

This was a topic of some debate here after the first week, so I thought that readers would be interested in Dr Saturday's take on the whole Boise St debate (i.e., should they be in the natl championship conversation), which to me should be the final word until things change:

The real debate should be about why college football has a championship structure that forces us into the unnecessary debate over the merits of a wildly successful upstart at all, when every question could be settled beyond a doubt with actual football instead of conjuring up make-beieve scenarios. As usual, the final answer is: The BCS sucks.

I hate how he says that "the questions can be resolved beyond a reasonable doubt."

As much as I respect Dr. Saturday, NEWSFLASH, the best team doesn't always win on a given day!

If you really take a close look, playoffs are about as arbitrary as the BCS.  (IME, the BCS is slightly less arbitrary.)  As the great Homer Simpson once said, "Blue M&Ms, green M&Ms, they all end up the same color in the end!"

Who cares if you are the "better" team if you can't put it together when it counts?  Must mean your team is lacking something bigger than 5 star recruits...

People don't care if Russia was better than the U.S. in the 1980 winter Olympics because THEY LOST THE GAME.

People don't care if Oklahoma was better than Boise State because THEY LOST THE GAME.

If playoffs are arbitrary, why play any games at all?  Why not just crown Alabama the national champion on Sept. 2nd and call it a season?

after reading the posts i am not encouraged by the majority of M fans disposal of the facts.  Boise State has destroyed the teams they have played OOC!  if they have not been big point margin victories they have atleast been victories.  whether they play in a BCS conference is irrelevant.  they beat who is put in front of them.  Major colleges do not have a lock on physical talent or for that matter coaching talent.  Give BSU their props and move on from it!  GO BLUE!  P.S. i believe they would have been a much better fit for the pac 10 than utah FWIW.
