Blowout a good team?

Submitted by dtod on

I was watching highlights from the 2006 Notre Dame game, and it got me thinking about about how great it was to beat the hell out of a quality team.

Obviously its been rough the past couple years, but one thing that would really make me feel good would be destroying one of the following opponents:

  • OSU
  • MSU
  • Iowa
  • Wisconsin
  • Penn State
  • Northwestern (borderline)

Just curious what everyone's opinion is on the possibility of this happening.

Penn State seems like the most likely candidate to me because of the uncertainty at quarterback and their losses at LB.

I expect 8 to 9 wins this year, and I'l take whatever wins we get. I could care less about how much we won by , on most occasions that is!

I would love to see an absolute massacre of MSU, on the other hand I hope and pray Rich serves up a big plate of FUCK YOU to Danny Hope. That guy is a first class prick, and he deserves to have his team embarassed. That being said we really NEED to start off with a beating of UConn, I think that, more than anything will set the tone for the rest of the year.

UConn and MSU.  The atmosphere in the Big House for game 1 will be electric.  I can easily see the team channeling that energy into a complete destruction of UConn.  I know, I know, their offense, our defense.  But here's to hoping.

And how can the team not be up for playing against rival MSU, a team that has beaten us twice in a row?  Again, a home game.  This one can spiral out of control for MSU in a hurry.

Ok, so using this list of teams, defining blowout as >2 tds:

  • UConn
I don't think this will be as hard of a game as people think simply because I expect our offense to be pretty sick.  They have a slower-moving offense that, while capable of putting up a lot of points, won't be able to hold on.  If we go up early, we can easily blow these guys out

    Chance of Blowout: 40%

  • OSU
Hey, we can dream, right? Well, maybe.  Remember, this is a long season before OSU gets to us, its entirely possible that they stumble their season away and we come in and win big, particularly if we are rolling.  That being said, it's not likely, and chances are, if we win, it will be by a short margin in a shootout.  If it isn't a small margin, then it won't feel like we blew them out, and it will come on something like a late INT return on a desperate attempt at a tying drive.

  • MSU
MSU fans think they will win this, but they've got all of the angry wolverine faithful that are hungry for blood and are waiting to prove otherwise, behind an improved offense and an improved defense.  MSU is better this year in some ways than last year, but notably lose standout reciever and bane-of-Michigan Blair White.  Still, they always play their best game every season against Michigan and don't have too much before they come in to Ann Arbor to face us.

However, we don't have too much before them either and are very hungry for blood.  This wil be the most dominant game Michigan plays all season - its entirely possible we will be undefeated before this one - and we'll be waiting to stick it to sparty.  I would not be shocked if RR decided to run up the score a little, in fact, I really want him to.

    Chance of Blowout: 50%

  • Iowa
Iowa has a good team that is pretty dangerous and can do a good job of threatening our secondary, but we nearly beat a better Iowa team last year with a much worse Michigan team.  That being said, they have good recieving talent and one of the best recieving coaches in college ball, and are likely fully equpipped to take advantage of this team's weaknessses.  Still, I expext we will win this if we are rolling, but I'd be shocked if their D didn't keep this one close.

This will be a big game for us, but we can win it, and may well be undefeated coming into this game.  This is very winnable and I wouldn't be shocked if we do win this, in fact, I'd be more suprised if we came in undefeated and didn't.

That being said, Stanzi never fails to turn the ball over a bunch, so it's possible that if they get desperate we could blow them out.  Don't count on it though

  • Wisconsin

Personally, I think this Wisconsin squad is the top in the Big Ten. They have a good defense, a very solid run game and O-line and a now-experienced QB that did pretty damn well last year.  I honestly think as a passer he's probably the best in the Big Ten (unless Forcier really improved since last season).  By all rights, these guys should breeze through their schedule with maybe a couple close Big Ten games, and go on and take the national championship.  They have all the tools in place to do so.

That being said, this is Wisconsin, a team fully capable of choking away good seasons, especially against Michigan.  Depending on how the rest of the season has gone, we could well win this game.  Wisconsin has had seasons collapse by this point multiple times before, so they could well get embarassed here.  So, in other words, I expect them to be strong but because its Wisconsin, the chance still exists.

    Chance of Blowout: 5%

  • Penn State
This is probably the most overrated squad in the Big Ten, but it is JoePa's most overrated squad. They have us at home.  They hate us, they will be a fearsome opponent.  Expect a Whiteout in one of the hardest stadiums in all of football to win in.

That being said, their team could just suck, so who knows, the sky is the limit.

    Hey, we can dream, right?

  • Purdue
Bad blood and a sub-par opponent don't mix well.  RR isn't afraid to show these guys who is boss.  If we don't suck, I think the team will WANT to blow purdue out.

    Chance of Blowout: 30%

  • Notre Dame
These guys are asking for it.

They think they are the shit just because they got a good new coach and have an untested raw young QB.

Don't be afraid, with Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate gone, these guys aren't too terrifying.  We can handle one star reciever just fine.  I think.

This will be a huge game though.  A lot of talent with a better coach and a MUCH better defensive mind at the reigns.

This one will be pretty tough but they have a freshman at QB.  All we can really do is rush the passer since our secondary is crappy.  We'll need to shut down Armando Allen and their run game anyways, so we'll be bringing people up to the line.  I don't expect their O-Line to impress at all.  We're going to get into the head of their freshman QB early and may well set up the blowout.  He'll make mistakes, the crowd will leave the game as a factor by the half and we won't take the boot of their necks.  Add some Denard Robinson theatrics to obliterate any confidence their defense has remaining  and you've got yourself a solid win, if not a blowout.

    Chance of Blowout: 37.5%
