Question about Last Night's BB Game

Submitted by MadMatt on

I'm not very clued in to basketball, and I was hoping the community could explain something from last night's game (sorry to go poking around that open wound).

It seemed to me that VT got to the line, A LOT; like they were in the double bonus while Michigan was still inbounding the ball after a non-shooting foul.  I checked the box score, and sure enough VT was 19-21 on free throws and our Wolverines were 4-7.  (The whole game in a nut shell right there; they had fewer misses on 21 attempts than we did on 7!)

However, I've seen no consternation at all among our community, either during the game or after.  I saw no reaction from the Michigan bench.  Were all those foul calls (and non-calls) legit?  Is there a reason why we maize and blue colored glasses wearing fans have no beef with the officials?  I'm not looking to start a controversy; I honestly believe there is something about BB I don't understand.

I was only able to watch the second half due to commuting home (west coast time), but the refs seemed to be doing an excellent job, and by excellent, I mean I didn't notice them at all. Michigan just collapsed as they do often. I've never seen a team lose a ten point lead so quickly on such a consistent basis. If they're up 10 with more than 3 mins left against a quality-ish opponent, they will blow the lead every time without fail. Not necessarily lose, but they will blow the lead in less than 60 seconds.

frustrated and angry with his team in the post game questions. He didn't like their foolish fouls or their failure to take it to the basket which he said was open all night (he actually said when Duncan is doing it you know how open the lanes were. He also didn't like their floor recognition, saying they have plays to go to as action dictates. Last year JB said a lot of times the opponent was just better. Not the case last night which gives me some hope they will improve.

about half of the game due to taking care of a sick kid, but I saw very little to complain about the officiating for.  The game may have been called a little tight, but it was not one-sided.

They took the ball to the hoop, we sat back and shot jumpers.  They earned most of the FTs that I saw, and I didn't see our guys getting hacked without calls or anything that you would get upset about.  The refs even gave US time back on the clock after the other coach complained at the end of the game and wanted a replay check on our second to last inbounds play.

IMO the team choked this one away.  Pretty hard to pin any blame on the refs for this one.

After my years of complaining he finally played a power forward at MSG and it worked brilliantly.  He went away from it against VT.  The seven footer can actually play.  not sure why jb is so worried about his bigs foul trouble.  Two of Donnal, DJ and Mo should be on the floor at all times.  Theyre heady bigs who can shoot in JB's offense and the twin towers works really well on interior defense and the defensive glass.

Unfortunately, JB and Mo have a personality issue.  You can tell that Mo comes from an X's and O's background.  He disagrees with a lot of what JB does, and lets JB know it.  Twice last night Mo was pulled for making a single mistake on the court.  First time he left his man on the post and the 2nd time he got the ball at the top of the key and was called for walking going to the hoop.

Just like Notre Dame last year, Mo was our most productive player in the game and JB waited too long to put him in at the end of the game.  Last year at least Mo was in foul trouble, this time he just mad him.

I'm not one to complain about officiating. I know when my teams suck and I know when they lost because of the officials. I saw nothing to complain about in regards to the loss to VT. I saw nothing to complain about in regards to the stinker in Iowa. But the "Corruption in Columbu$" is a different story. There is a difference between bad officiating and straight up corrupt officiating.
