Nice Article About Incoming Freshmen

Submitted by dj89 on

The Detroit News has a nice bit about our incoming class and the impressions they are making.  The quotes from Lewis are the best!  I love seeing a leader on the team who is genuinely excited about feeling competition from the freshman.  Entitlement is the infection that kills champions and we have none of that here.

Who's got it better than us?

Coach likes the guys that are extremely competitive, not entitled, gifted and versatile. My favorite quote from Lewis was this one; "before coach Harbaugh, tickets were $5 and a Pepsi." I completely forgot about that.....

...and it's not really surprising.

You had a coach who wanted to recruit kids to fit the "Michigan profile" or whatever that sterotype is in the same way Duke Basketball has one or now Stanford football has one. There will certainly be exceptions, but Stanford football supposed to be the nerds, Duke basketball is the white kids that are dirty, etc. - again, there are plenty of exceptions to the sterotype, but Hoke far too often recruited to the "Michigan Man" stereotype.

That's not saying he didn't recruit talent - Hoke had great recruiting classes.

Harbaugh's does that some, but priority #1 is competition. He can't go 3 sentences without using some version of the word. If you REALLY want to know the advantage of these camps? It's that you get to see who these kids really are. How do they compete?

FACT: Harbaugh would take a slightly less talented player who competes at the highest level in EVERYTHING over the kid who oozes talent - but doesn't care to work at it. And he's able to identify this in his recruits.

This recruiting class comes from all over the country, different backgrounds, different talent levels. I guarantee you the one thing every single one of them - including the effing kicker has in common...they want to compete. Jim Harbaugh wouldn't have it any other way.

Harbaugh's getting top talent, he's getting guys who fit the University, but he's also getting guys who want to compete every day at everything. Rather than having just one of those, he's dedicated to getting players with all 3 characteristics.

Michigan isn't on the level until they prove it on the field...but you see the same things out of Saban/Bama. How is it that they've won so much, and never get complacent? Because they recruit kids who absolutely want to compete each and every day at everything.

This one is on Harbaugh and the coaching staff, Michigan is going to benefit greatly by it. Finally no more apologizing. No more justifying poor performance with "but their such great kids." They were, they are, but you can have great kids who want to dominate in everything and all the time.
