Of course we aren't the only team to have jersey number traditions.  #12 at Alabama, for instance, is t QBs what #1 is to WR at Michigan.  At TA&M #12 goes to the best-performing walkon ("12th man").  #38 at Ol Miss.  Etc.

It is curious that a person "sick of numbers" would click on a thread about numbers, and then spend lifespan to post about numbers and how sick he was of seeing people post about numbers.  Masochism much?

There never has been a tradition associated with #1 in any way shape or form beyond the fact that Braylon whined for the number, subsequently made a big deal about it and then decided that it was now a tradition for Michigan wide receivers.

Braylon endowed a scholarship that first goes to whoever wears #1, then if no one is wearing #1 to another player. I'm sure that's why he talks about who's wearing #1. I personally like a WR wearing it and think it should be earned, and wonder what the team will think if a non-receiver and/or freshman gets it. But Coach Harbaugh will do what he thinks is best.

In his rant against RR, he mad the statement, "That jersey has never been worn by anyone but a wide receiver." Sorry Braylon, you should have known better. And it was not until 2003 that it was considred a number that had to be earned. Up until that time, the equipment manager assigned that number to five incoming freshmen.

I agree with those who feel we should just stop the controversy surrounding it. Best way to do that is retire it in honor of the greatest wide receiver in Michigan history.

Braylon Edwards made no such statement.  Sorry Wolfman, you should have known better.  What Braylon actually said was that giving the number to a non-WR was breaking a tradition.  That was correct.  It was not mere coincidence that, for almost 30 years, no non-WR had worn the number.  It was not accidnetal that that number had not been handed out in 2005, 2006, or 2007.

Only tradition that matters is winning. League championships, Beating the in state rival and the rival from Columbus. The toughness that Harbaugh brings in year two along with the addition of Brown on defense can be just what is needed to make everyone forget numbers on jerseys and the losing ways of the previous coaches.

I disagree.  I think that Micigan's uniforms, for instance, have a traditional look and that the school should retain its traditional Maize and Blue.   Even after defeats.  I think that the Michigan marching band should play the Victors as their initial number and after touchdowns, even in defeats.

I think that many traditions at Michigan, and in college football in general, matter.  Winning isn't the only thing that matters for me and a lot of other Mchigan fans.  People who care only about winning should probably root for Alabama.

The history shows non-receivers have worn #1 in the past. I too wish we could get past some of our self-imposed rules. I prefer players making their own mark with their numbers...stop switching all the time. Gonna give the #1 jersey out this season? Give it to the #1 player coming in when it's available. Mr. Gary, c'mon down!
