Players say the same thing every year. They spout hopeful cliches about how things are different, everyone is more motivated, etc. I don't think they're being disingenuous. But they just say what they're supposed to say.

I'm talking specifically about what the players are saying is different now. There hasn't been much said but enough during the spring practices and here and there to get a sense that it is different. Not just the typical cliches about it's a 'new season' And opposing players and staffs said the Hoke teams were soft and could be intimidated.

In the past few years, recruits always said they liked Michigan because it was "chill". Chill doesn't bring the tough athletes that are going to play with an edge. This is where MSU has eaten our lunch, but it ends with Harbaugh.

I don't believe the players are just spouting clichés like we're used to hearing. We all watched this team and they were soft. Even opponents have stated how soft they knew our team was. Also, while it is true all coaches want to instill toughness many, and I say this from personal experience as a coach as well as a fan, simply don't know how to do it. Hoke's first team was probably the toughest, then they progressively softened up. Harbaugh's Stanford and 49ers teams were tough as shit.

You can talk physical toughness all you want. Football players are tough it is the sport. I don't know if that was Hoke's problem. It is the constant mistakes that had nothing to do with our toughness or lack thereof. The missed assignments the penalties the turnovers etc etc etc are all staples of poorly coached teams. I have a lot of faith in Harbaugh at the very least we will eliminate these which will ultimately result in wins.

Have to disagree with you the team was not as mentally tough as it should have been.  There were numerous games you could see it on the sidelines that they had given up.

This was a result of Hoke's coaching style and not the kids themselves.  I liked Brady but he seemed to have lost the edge from his MAC days when he came to Michigan.

However, we all agree with your statement that Harbaugh will instill tough as nails mental discipline on these kids.  Harbaugh will bleed all over the field to win a game and that will be adopted by his players.

JH wants to hurt teams that are have the misfortune to face off against him.

Mentally they have been very weak I agree. I was more talking about this idea of physical toughness. I watched the boys play bruised and bloodied over and over as their coaching staff stumbled around. Probably withstood beatings we can't imagine so physical toughness is not the issue as far as I can tell. Mentally though couldn't agree more, wilted at the first occurance if adversity.

I am not aware of any "edge" from Hoke's MAC days.  He took over a .500 team (5-6, 5-6, and 6-6 under Bill Lynch), and proceeded to go 4-8, 2-9, 4-7, 5-7, 7-6, and 12-1 (34-38 overall).  In other words, he took a mediocre MAC team, made it worse, but had one outlier year with a handful of seniors who would play on Sunday. The fact that we hired, and then paid a top-10 salary to a coach with no coordinator experience, and who had managed to crack .500 only 3 seasons (out of 8) as a head coach (including that 7-6 season) is really astounding.

Hoke preached Toughness....but Practiced????

You wanna Toughen a steak....leave it on the grill longer.

Same with football.  Wanna toughen your team?  Practice them harder and longer.
