Steve Shields joining hockey staff as volunteer assistant
In his own words:
The University of Michigan has always been home to me. I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to work alongside Coach Berenson, Billy Powers and Brian Wiseman. I'm a teacher and developmental coach at heart and coming back to Michigan allows me to continue my education and gives me the best platform to continue my developmental work with student-athletes here at Michigan. I can't wait to give back to the University that gave me the tools to do what I am doing today. We have outstanding student-athletes, and I'm ecstatic to be a part of the hockey program again.
After retiring from playing, Shields was a volunteer assistant for Mel Pearson at Michigan Tech from 2011-2013 and served as a consultant for the Florida Panthers in 2013.
I think Red's earned the right to leave on his own terms - when he wants, and hopefully on a high not. But I hope that when Red does leave, it means that Shields has the opportunity to work with Pearson again (at Michigan).
Because I love reunion stories. Oh, and I also love it when Michigan wins hockey games.
Shields did wonders for the goalies up at tech those two years, but then again Jamie Phillips was solid last year without him. We will see.
His only year at MTU was 2011, then there was a mutual parting of ways.
Don't think three is correct either

Great news. Shields was the man.
I don't think he was the first to get creative with the mask, but I'll always remember him for it.

Nice homage to the great Gary Cheevers with his Bruins mask
I'm a bit too MGrowYoung to have recognized the name, but indeed that was his inspiration. Any other netminders you know of from back in the day who customized the mask like that? Is Cheevers the original?
Cheevers is one of the first, and certainly the most famous, guys to paint his helmet with any sort of design. Gilles Gratton is also famous for his design and also for being a crazy person.
had a mask that had a theme going, but dryden's was a bit boring by comparison to Cheevers.
look at that old school glove that Cheevers is using. it was amazing tha tyou catch anything with those things. they were like bad, heavy first basemen's gloves. And then they got wet...
I was wondering why Blackburn wasn't listed anymore.
Dryden's first masks were smaller and the design resembled a ski mask. But as masks got larger, he modified the design to look like a target, with a red circle, shaped like the Canadiens' logo, inside a blue one.
