Mel Pearson/Hockey season postmortem

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Obligatory thread. Here are my candidates for the next man behind the bench-

  1. Mel Pearson
  2. Mike Babcock*
  3. Rick Bennett (Union)

*Hackett got Harbaugh. I know there are some people on here who said the rumors were true. And he did have that random outburst of "yeah I'll be on the bench at Michigan working for Red Berenson" during a presser. That struck me is very strange since it was out of nowhere.

reflections on season: son of a bitch! When did it all go wrong? The weekend at Minnesota? The loss at OSU or the debacle at PSU?

but I'd be willing to bet he loves Ann Arbor as much or more than Houghton. He spent most of the last 30 years in Ann Arbor working under Red when he clearly could've been a HC elsewhere. Do we really think 2011 was the first time Tech was like "Heyyyyy...what about that Pearson guy? Maybe we should ask him about coaching up here"

Plus, he must see the disadvantages he has up there. Much harder to recruit to, smaller budgets, etc. Sure, he's developed his talent, but there will always be a ceiling to the type of players he can recruit to Houghton in this day and age.

Anyone but him at this point would be an improvement. He is now officially WORSE than late stages Lloyd Carr.

No fucking NCAA's for THREE years. Are you fucking kidding me?!!?

Be careful what you wish for. I would have taken a few more years of Lloyd over most of the last 7. Especially, if he would have brought that offense in the Florida game w him the next year. I remember thinking, where did that come from - I know part of it was henne finally being healthy, but damn that was a beautiful game to go out on.

What part of that is inaccurate?? Carr at least made some high profile bowls 2 of his last 3 seasons, while we are 0-3 with the tourney in hockey. You can go ahead and fuck off, now.

We, in all likelihood, have 13 more months of Red. And that's fine with me. I'm going to savor every last moment of it. We're not wretched. We've completely underachieved, absolutely. But we were close to the tourney,. And anything can happen there.

I like our team setup next year. We are probably gonna take a small step back on offense losing Hyman and Lynch. But a solid leap forward on the blue line and I think Racine is really locking down the goalie position. Now a Michigan Hockey Summer could ruin it all, but I'm hoping that no one leaves early. One I'm worried about is Werenski.

I doubt anybody can name a program that has been savaged more by high-profile recruit defections and early departures than Michigan has been over the last decade or so. If all the guys who left after one or two seasons or committed but then backed out had played at least through their junior seasons, Red would have at least three more Frozen Four appearances and very likely another title.

I'd be interested to see what your response is to Brian's post here:

Red Berenson has two years left on his contract and says this will be his last one. Speculation about his replacement has been rife. Veritably so. Folks around the program have been chattering about Red Wings coach Mike Babcock taking over for a few years now, primarily Michael Spath at the Wolverine but also from guys at the Daily:

What say you? It's not just message board chatter
