Hockey head coaching speculation

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Red himself said a couple years ago that he'll walk away when he feels he is getting in the way of the program succeeding. This team has been an utter mess since Mel Pearson left. 3 years without a tournament should give Red a hint that maybe it's time to hang it up, no?

Coaching candidates anyone? I know I keep seeing Mel Pearson's name brought up in threads.

Cuz I see NO connection in your statement... Hoke was a new coach with no success had earned nothing except one BCS bowl win then began endangering players, and lack of preparation due to incompetence or overwhelming. I just gave reasons why these aren't even close to the things going wrong with the team and still said Reds time is done... I was all for hoke getting canned he wasn't a power 5 coach I didn't like the hire in the first place.

So in short your comment makes no sense there are zero parallels in these coaching speculations

Hoke brought in the talent- then didn't develop them AT ALL. In fact kids went backwards(Morris)

Red hasn't brought in high level talent- develops it into an around .500 team anyways.

So really there's no comparison still... One coach had talent couldn't use it. The other didn't have it and remains .500 consistently. And the second coach has NCs under his belt so excuse me if I don't force him out or beg him to leave

Ding ding ding. This team has been lacking decent defensemen and it has killed them. People talk about how Downing is the best one out there and that's sad. You know how often guys blow by #5 or he makes a horrendous breakout pass? ALL THE FUCKING TIME. De Jong looks clueless out there half the time and Lohan is slower than Gordie Howe (if he played now). Serville is serviceable and Martin has shown a glimmer of hope. Werenski is the only guy worth a damn back there and even he needs to work on his defensive zone play (he's young so it was expected early in the season Zander he has shown improvement)

And I totally agree with Nagelvoort being a better goalie. He is flat out better positionally and in terms of rebound control. His problem is indeed consistency.
People like to rag on the goaltending (yes it isn't solid in fact it is average at best) but those guys are just being left out to dry WAY too often. Do they allow weak goals? Yes of course but how many guys are left open in the slot or left in front of the crease to screen or sitting free waiting for rebounds?

Fails developing them as this whole team looks better than they've been in the past. He fails at talent acquisition most likely because he's old and young kids don't relate to him. I personally don't believe that is cause to beg a coach to leave on his own especially one as great as Red was. Just my opinion I guess

That's not true. First, the mistakes that they're making are correctable. Transition assignments, gap control. Ill-timed pinches. Those things can be fixed, but they don't get fixed here unless the players learn themselves. Like Kevin Clare trying to be Erik Karlsson every time he stepped on the ice. Second. The talent argument is bunk. Brennan Serville was an OHA Top Prospect and had a ceiling as a #1. Nolan De Jong had a ceiling as a #2. These guys can't get off the scratch list because they've been making the same mistakes since their first week. Besides. These are the guys they recruited. There is no scapegoat to blame on the OHL because the only defenseman this team doesn't have is Jared Walsh, and he didn't project as a shutdown anyway.

So what I said wasn't true and then you confirmed the fact that these players have not corrected the issues I mentioned which have plagued them since day 1. I'm unsure of what's not true? I did not mention the OHL once.

Only if the players listen and ADAPT. if you truly believe Red and his staff aren't telling the players the things you stated you're crazy. I actually think it's just as much their talent levels as their mental mistakes causing them to fail in the D end

I've seen the defensive gurus coach blueline technique. Go to a Western practice and watch Andy Murray. He's meticulous about everything, down to the smallest detail of what his defenseman do. Now, go to a Michigan practice and see all of those things they don't do.

I've watched an Andy Murray practice and MET him he gave us his coaching style and told us of his points based system for intangibles and stats such as blocked shots, clearing the zone etc. I've also seen Red coach a practice and talked to his assistants about their system. One coach places more emphasis on the D end and the other on the O end. I bet you can guess who's who? So I'd say reds had more college success than Murray and lately the D have been to bad to overcome. That's on Red for recruiting only not coaching or development. So yea cool man you saw Murray? I've talked to michigans, ferris' and WMUs coaches.

So I think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves with the Mel coming back train for several reasons

  • He's making more than Red at Michigan Tech and just signed an extension going through 2020-2021 season
  • His original contract had a 275,000 buyout going down 25,000 each year while I'm not certain I'd figure on something similar in the new contract
  • Tech is his alma mater who he played for under another legendary coach John Macinnes
  • Tech alums are crazy excited for him to be back, my dad who was in school during the same time as Mel can't stop talking about how good Tech is going to be now and about how exciting their return to glory is
  • Hockey at Tech is football at Michigan, no sport is bigger or more important to the university or even remotely close to it's level of importance
  • College hockey is different in terms of recruiting and dominance the teams currently ranked 1 and 2 North Dakota and Minnesota State are located in Grand Forks and Mankato not really emminently more desirable locations than Houghton

Do I hope Mel comes back to Michigan and we win everything for all the years he's here? Yes, yes I do but I'm just not sure that if Red retires Mel comes back.

Red loves Michigan. He knows he'll be hanging them up, and that Hackett needs both his help and the right timing to secure the best possible coach for Michigan hockey.
