SB vs #9 Baylor Open Thread

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Softball Team got off to a good start today with a 9-1 Mercy-Rule win over San Jose State.  We play #9 Baylor at 8pm at the annual Jdi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

Yesterday we lost to #1 Florida and #21 ASU.  So another win today against #9 Baylor will certainly help the ole' spirits.

I don't pay as much attention to softball since I graduated and can't go to home games, so I have a question. Do most teams play the type of early season schedule Michigan plays? Ten ranked teams and seven top ten teams. I imagine the south and west teams don't need to because they get them during the season.

You pretty much put your finger on it.  No one, absolutely no one, plays a tougher non-conference slate than Michigan does.  Powerhouses from the Pac 12, SEC, and the Big 12 know they'll face some stiff competition during conf. play, so they only schedule one or two tough tournaments in the non-conf.  Many don't leave their home state (or even home ballpark) until conf. play.

The analogy I would use is that Michigan is kinda like Boise State in football a few years ago, when they were in the top-ten all the time.  They knew they'd just blow out most teams in their conf., so they were always trying to schedule challenging non-conf. games.  The difference is that, unlike in football where one loss can ruin you, softball is a long season with a big tournament at the end.  Consequently, where Boise State couldn't find many teams up for the challenge, we're able to schedule lots of games with great teams.
