UM @ Utah 9/3/15. Salt Lake area attractions?

Submitted by Unfiltered Manball on

Am seriously contemplating a road trip with my brother to catch this game.  Our sister lives in the area and said she will show us around for the long weekend.  I completely trust her and it sounds great.  Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of great eats, bars, sites, etc. that the area has to offer.

September 3-  Still sooooooo far away......

Thanks.

I moved from Ann Arbor to Salt Lake five years ago and love it here. The outdoor activities are second to none. I don't know of anywhere else that allows you to be in the mountains actually doing what you want to do in the mountains, e.g., mountain biking, trail running, or skiing in 10-15 minutes. The food scene is nice with high quality restaurants. If you are coming, spend Friday at snowbird or in park city. Ride the tram at snowbird or bicycle the Wasatch back trail. On Saturday, go and enjoy college football that starts with BIG games at 10 am! I can't wait for Harbaugh and Michigan to visit!

I spent a lot of time out there this summer for work. This summer was the first time I'd ever been out there, and I have to say, SLC is one of my favorite cities that I've been to now, and I don't ski and am not Mormon (which seem to be the two primary draws to SLC). I don't know that I have any new places to add, but some highlights: - Red Iguana for sure - Squatters (excellent menu all around, but especially the meatloaf...good beers on tap. I like dark beers and enjoyed their Polygamy Porter). - Red Rock (also a microbrewery, not far from Squatters. They have a steak/French onion sandwich that is outstanding.) - Bayou (gumbo and jambolaya are excellent). - Cafe Zupas (I don't know if it's a western-US chain or if it's just in Utah, but it was my favorite place to go for lunches. They have a Panera-like menu with soups, salads, and sandwiches, but it's a notch or two above Panera in my opinion.) I never made it up to Park City, as I never stayed over through a weekend, but a lot of people talked very highly of it. Also, you're a few months late now, but for some reason SLC loves them some Halloween festivities.

There's another place, a chain, that I really like. It has expanded beyond UT where it began, but it is a somewhat unique concept: Rumbi Island Grill. It has Caribbean and Pacific Island inspired cuisine. You pick the carb of choice (brown rice, lo mein noodles, etc.), protein (including awesome Hawaiian style pulled pork), etc. Decor is definitely meant to have you thinking of taking your next vacation. It's one of my favorite places for a quick lunch or dinner in UT (and now elsewhere in the western U.S.).

and SLC is a very pretty city and area.

failing that, rent a jet with tires and see if you can break the land-speed record west of town...

Getting a drink in a SLC resturant is interesting to say the least... I still haven't figured out the Utah liquor laws.  I do recall having to go to the bar next door and order a drink to take it back to the resturant I was at.

Order a Martini or shot at a bar. Do not buy a glass of wine at a bar. The liquor laws ARE ridiculous. DO buy beer. Bottle or glass. 12 ounces is 12 ounces. Any other drinks you are screwed. We call it the " Mormon Pour". Alcohol is State regulated but pricing is decent at liquor stores. Hiking, fishing is AWESOME! BYOB rules. See you there. Go BLUE!
