Getting Over The Hump

The program has gotten to the playoffs 2 years in a row and has beaten OSU 2 times in a row. Yay!

However, in the playoffs, this team has fallen apart as both an underdog and as a favorite. Obviously the team is in a pretty good spot, but what is needed to get the team to the next level?

-Better Athletes?

-Better Coaching?

-Better Assistants?

-Better Facilities?

-Better Bathrooms?

What are the missing pieces to become a contender like OSU, Georgia, and Clemson (most years)?

No we didn’t. This is the same ridiculous logic that the Buckeyes make with the whole 'It was only five plays that TTUN had or we would have won the game'.

Total nonsense. We need to own it. We got beat even if it wasn’t completely due to TCU‘s play. They were more efficient when it counted. That’s how championship teams play when it matters most.

How about better refs? JK, we had opportunities to take control of this game. Last year we were outmatched, but I don't think this year's loss is a systemic failure. I honestly think we would beat TCU 4 out of 5 times.

As for what we need going forward... we have good receivers but are missing at least one elite one. Or perhaps we just need to improve the coaching of our receivers, especially their route running.

You'll never get Elite receivers here cuz run blocking is the first requirement to be a wide receiver at michigan. Still no thousand yard receivers under Harbaugh if I'm not mistaken I don't think there's even been a guy with60 catches yet but I could be wrong. Harbaugh quarterbacks seem to average about 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns that's not winning you in national title and 2022

Record in bowl games is absolutely terrible and it doesn’t matter who the coach is. Not sure how to fix it. I didn’t watch the game but it sounds like Michigan tried to outsmart itself and didn’t stick to what got them there. Tired of the same thing every season. To make matters worse OSU is going to win it all.

they wont be a contender like the top handful of programs.  admin/alums will never accept what it takes to reach that level.  on top of michigans culture, they fight weather, population shifts, etc so itll be uphill battle for variety of reasons.  anyone expecting michigan to consistently compete with the top dogs should reevaluate their expectations.

they may occasionally get there when things break right but theyre not bama or osu

Better officiating.

We out gained them in every offensive category except 3rd down efficiency. We out gained them except in rushing yards but which in the end seems irrelevant because of the way the game evolved

So if this was the difference in game planning, then it impinged performance. In the end, it's what you can point to as a why answer to losing. But Michigan didn't lose, unless you spend five minutes trying to overturn a decision an official on the field instantly decided and made correctly.

So, in the end, the booth decides the final play is potential targeting. Then when replay shows the play is targeting, it decides targeting is an overreach. What a fucking way to call a game.

I think just the acceptance that the rich man’s service academy offense is not conducive to winning championships. That we’re going to have to win shootouts, pass the ball more than we run it sometimes, and prepare the entire season accordingly.

Better psychology. We should be employing sports psychologists so that we play better under pressure. We should also stop getting in rhetorical pissing matches and puffing our chest out without any wins to back it up. Let our play do the talking instead of getting in these dumb sound bite battles about how we come from the 'Big, bad, physical, Big Ten' and then playing like cream puffs, like tonight.

Not playing one of the worst games of the season in the playoffs. That’s probably not even a fair statement because the offense played well minus a couple of mistakes that were the absolute worst kind. We literally had three turnovers that cost us 21 points immediately. Two pick sixes and a fumble at the goal line. Surrender 21 points on those and lose by six…it’s gut wrenching. This team was good enough to win it all. We might be just as good next year so that’s at least somewhat comforting.

The team needs a couple things, aside from better bowl preparation, which Harbaugh consistently fucks up. It needs Corum back because Edwards isn’t an every down back. He doesn’t consistently grind out yards and is more of a Percy Harvin. And we need more dangerous receivers. Our receivers are very average.
Oh and we need our OL to stop choking in bowl games.

A healthy Edwards as a gadget player who lines up all over the field like a poor man’s Harvin, Reggie Bush, or even McCaffrey to compliment a returning Corum - while flanked by young speedy WRs and Loveland as an additional huge target - is one of my dream scenarios next season.
