2014 Offensive Line……Realistic Projections?

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on

This unit will no doubt be the linchpin to our 10 plus win season in 2014.  Watching Taylor Lewan on NFL Network inspired me to gander at our O Line situation for next season.

Here is what I project.  What do you guys think?

LT.  Erik Magnuson

        Logan Tulley-Tillman/ Blake Bars

RT.  Ben Braden

        Chris Fox/ Blake Bars

LG.   Kyle Kalis

          Kyle Bosch

RG.  David Dawson

         Dan Samuelson

C.  Graham Glasgow

      Patrick Kugler

      Jack Miller

Most of these fellas will have 2 years in the program and should be physically ready to compete at a Big Ten level.  The issue should NOT be run blocking.  I forsee issues in Pass Pro particularly with two new tackles.  This is not good for Gardner who doesn't show the most patience in the pocket.  This could potentially lead to so ill advised scrambles or just plain leave us susceptible to stout D lines....unfortunately along the lines of what MSU and Ohio will be rolling out.  Given the loss of Butt, it appears MAJOR work needs to be put in by this group come August to regain our BiG title form.  It can be done...but it will be an uphill battle.  This is a very green bunch....albeit it a very talented one.  Go BLue!!!

I was kind enough to leave this with the thought that, going forward, there would be a cap on the frequency of such threads - obviously not expecting one so soon after yesterday. However, there is a vast difference between OMG Shirtless' ribbing and straight up calling people "douchebags". He is correct, incidentally - your history of starting threads is not stellar. Points return in a month.

There are a lot of people who use this site to clown others and build their own self esteem. I will continue to call them out when I deem it neccessary and just. I posted a simple post about the O line and certain characters find it proper to go out of their way to belittle me personally....so yes. The only addition to my previous title would be placing "internet" before his title of douche bag. Some of you take this a little too personally....it's supposed to about Michigan. You guys can try and "son" some of these other cats on this blog. Don't check me....ever. Go Blue.

You want to call out names and belittle so I'll call you out. Some of you need to be called out. You guys are the same ones that offend recruits and belittle 16 and 17 year olds. Internet cowards. Have a nice day.

You go out of your way to belittle. You called me out when you didn't need to. You made it personal. People like you ruin blog sites. So do the people who back you. Arrogance holds Michigan back and people like you make Michigan ugly to a lot of people. Fortunately for me you cannot tarnish the Michigan that I've had the honor of being exposed to. Have a great day Shirtless!

Glasgow would have to perform poorly to lose his job but I think Kuglar will be pushing him. Kalis and Bosch at Gaurd. Mag at tackle. Braden and Dawson will be a competition all the way for the other tackle.

Isn't it at least encouraging we're talking about so many guys as serviceable linemen? There's actually some competition and depth. As far as I can see, we have two juniors, Glasgow and Bryant, and no seniors among those expected to play much.

The o-line more than any other position defines the rebuild this roster needed and is getting. Everyone is a year better and will be still better in 2015.

It's a good group of talent and I'm comfortable we're going in the right direction. We've been rolling in a high level of quality in our recruits. It's a question of time.

Encouraging?  We have a long way to go until encouragin is a word I'd use to describe our O line situation.  What we're brining back on the offensive line I would deem discouraging.  We are much less proven going into 2014 than we were going into 2013.

What did the interior of our O line prove last year?  That they were the worst in the history of the school?  That's about it.

I may be in the minority, but I would be more encouraged if none of the guys who started last year start this year, it will mean that we have better options than the worst group of O linemen in school history.

Should we have signed some free agents, or perhaps made a trade?

The roster inherited by this staff pretty much dictated 2013 would be a lean year on the interior. There simply wasn't much in the way of guys ready for the extent of duty they would get. Further seasoning along with the increasing depth will make for improvement.

The offensive line will be better than last year but a year away from being dominant.  The improvement will be in the running game due to a year's development on the interior.  Pass protection will be about the same with better interior play offset by younger tackles.

From that baseline, I think there's a little more tail to the upside than the downside, but when it comes to M-football I'm a degenerate optimist.

As for projecting the line, I'll do it differently and list most probabie to least probable starter.

1.  Mangusson

2.  Glasgow

3.  Kalis

4-1/3  Braden

4-2/3  Bosch

6.  Kugler

7.  Dawson
