OT - First female RB in men's pro football league unfazed in debut

Submitted by Cold War on

History was finally going to be made on Saturday, but Jennifer Welter had to wait an extra two and a half quarters before the moment arrived.

For the first time ever, a woman was playing running back in a men's professional football game.

The 36-year-old Women's Pro Football veteran made her debut with the Indoor Football League's Texas Revolution this weekend after signing to try out for the team last month.

If this were a 5'2 130 lb. guy who  was signed because he was a celebrity and he was getting knocked around in a similar fashion, would the reaction be the same?

Of course not.  The reaction would be: Look at that stupid fucking idiot who thought he could play football with the big boys.  Everybody point and laugh at the moron getting destroyed for a publicity stunt.  Then there would be writers wringing their hands about gladiatorial publicity stunts designed to take advantage of people for cheap laughs.

Coyote has it right.  Why do we twist ourselves into knots and rig playing fields in order to pretend that two groups of people who are fundamentally, obviously, biologically different are in fact exactly the same?

I mentioned Ali v. Holmes above and think it's a good comparison. Obviously incapable athlete being strung along by people looking to make a quick buck playing off of name/gender without a lot of regard for the consequences.

Specifically if it was Tom Cruise or another slight of stature gazillionaire I wouldn't feel that bad because the power dynamics are greatly skewed in his favor with the IFL. If this was Tom Cruise's great-grand nephew with pro football dreams who happened to look exactly like him I'd feel the same way as I do about this woman.

My first thought - oh well she's probably big and athletic enough to handle it, I guess.

5 ft 2 , 130 lbs?

WAT?

Gonna have to say she took the hit like a pro and just jumped up. I don't know many 130 pound guys that could have taken a hit and be driven back like that and get up and walk away . She is tough.
