MBB: Full non-conference schedule out & unofficial B1G schedule
Full non-conf slate released. Michigan has scheduled quite a few HBCUs in recent years but this schedule has a few on it. http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/mich-m-baskbl-sched.html

But I only count 2 in an 11 game non-conf schedule (excluding the 2 exhibitions), not exactly HBCU heavy.
With a remaining schedule that includes road games at Iowa State and Duke, home games with Arizona, plus neutrals with Stanford, Florida St/VCU in Puerto Rico, then a likely 3rd game in Puerto Rico of G'Town or K State, I think that's a more than acceptable non-conf. schedule for a team of what Michigan's caliber should be this year.

I thought Houston Baptist was but I guess not after a quick search.

Its gonna be another long 2 months with about 5-6 watchable games before B10 play starts

Much tougher schedule than last year which will hopefully prep us well for the Big Ten. Going to Duke is almost surely going to be a loss, but it should help prep the freshmen for road trips come conference time.
On a side note it's funny that you mention HBCUs because I've noticed from my experience (notably as a black student a private school in Grosse Pointe and at UM) that there are a interestingly large number of people unaware of what those are (despite us playing Delaware St in 2009)

Huh, I had no idea that Delaware St was a HBCU until I read your comment. Learn something new every day, I guess.
In my defense, I'm about as white as they get. Saltine.

Michigan is a combined 21-0 against HBCU conferences (SWAC and MEAC). Michigan has played a lot of HBCUs recently. In Beilein's tenure alone, they've played-
- 11/25/2008 vs Norfolk State (W 83-49)
- 11/29/2008 vs Savannah State (W 66-64 OT)
- 12/29/2008 vs NC Central (W 77-57)
- 12/5/2009 vs Arkansas Pine-Bluff (W 67-53)
- 12/22/2009 vs Coppin State (W 76-46)
- 12/14/2010 vs NC Central (W 64-44)
- 12/13/2011 vs Arkansas Pine-Bluff (W 63-50)
- 12/17/2011 vs Alabama A&M (87-57)
That Savannah State game was insane, Novak hit a layup with no time left but apparently time ran out which it really didn't.
Most of these teams are quite terrible. Grambling State went 0-27(!) last year.

which actually isn't that unusual among the HBCUs. Kind of crazy.
Their student-athletes get to see all different corners of the country every November & December, but it doesn't seem like a fun basketball life at all.

I think we are a fair bit better than Duke this year, so I think our game at Cameron is a toss up, not one we almost certainly will lose.

However, this year...I like our chances MUCH better.

I don't think Michigan would have won in OT but you never know. I was more disappointed that Darius didn't shoot the 3 for the win. We had nothing to lose at all.
I remember just hoping we could at least crack the NIT after that awful conference start. And then Stu made that shot and the rest is history.

I don't think we would have wanted Darius shooting the 3, but TImmy was open in the corner and that was when it felt like every shot of his was going to go in. Still I think we can add D-Mo's miss there (along with Trey's against Arkansas and @OSU) to the list of shots redeemed by the Kansas game.
August 23rd, 2013 at 3:02 PM ^
Darius was trying to take a high percentage shot to either tie or take the lead, I can't recall. But it was the right move to go for two, even the right move to go for it himself

I'm still surprised we got Duke for the B1G/ACC Classic. I would think the media would be completely slobbering over a Duke/Indiana matchup, even though I think Duke would kill them.
I don't like our chances at Cameron Indoor much at all but it would be nice to see us play a good game there as opposed to the Ellerbe years when we....didn't play very well there.
Arizona is impressive team to have on the resume. Iowa State can be dangerous.
Hate, hate, HATE that we don't have a game with the Bucks at Crisler.

know if duke will be all that great that early in the season they'll still be good... but you have to remember that they are replacing 3 starters that did the majority of the scoring for them last year... so there might be some growing pains for them until ACC play starts...

I wish a few more of these were convenient for those of us visiting town for football games. Coppin State? I am so excited...
