I'm watching the Tigers playing now and 3 games in, performance is not up to standard so far. We don't need a closer when we don't have games to close!
Did you not watch games 2 and 3? The bullpen is the weakest part of the team.
It's a bit of a longshot, but I don't see much downside here. Worst case scenario is he has just enough left to make it to the big club, then gets rocked by major league hitters, but that's a very unlikely scenario and I doubt that the Tigers front office will let that go on for very long. It's much more likely that if Valverde just doesn't have what it takes he'll show it in Toledo and that will be the end of that. And if he's regained his old form then we've got a pretty good closer. I see no reason not to give him one last shot.
