US News & World Report 2010 College Rankings
Saw on the front page of yahoo this morning that the US News and World Report College rankings came out.
Michigan checks in at no. 27 Nationally and no. 4 among public Universities.
I'm not sure how many of you actually care but our friends in Columbus were no. 53 and 18(public only). Michigan State, 46 and 29. Then Notre Dame was ranked ahead of us at 20th.

It's not bullshit, if you read their site, they give you the exact numerical calculation behind their score. You may not agree with their algorithm, but it's not made up.

I know it's not made up, I'm just saying I don't think their algorithm is an accurate way of ranking schools... some of the criteria seems arbitrary and irrelevant in deciding whether one school should be ranked higher than another.

MBA, MD, law? Those are all graduate degrees. The overall rankings are for undergraduate.

But the same thing can be said for our undergraduate poli sci, history, english, and chemistry programs so the point still stands.

Where does our English department rank? I've never heard of such a thing.

The Gourman Report actually ranked Michigan in it's top 15 or so back when it was printed.
FWIW, best I could find to back that up was a guy quoting it on some message board without a link. Not the most solid of sources, I know.

Three of the programs you mention are grad programs with zero bearing on undergrad rankings. When I applied to colleges I could have given two shits how good the programs I couldn't enter for another four years were.
As an alum, I could also give two shits how high we are on these lists. In the end, it's just a pissing contest... as the Duke of Discharge said in another thread, perception > reality. As long as the perception of Michigan is high it's not hurting me any. I have better things to tie my self esteem to than my alma mater's academic standings.

It looks like McFarlin couldn't keep away...

If you people can't see that the Duke of Discharge is a parody of a poster here, then...I don't even know.

The tagline...
August 20th, 2009 at 3:22 PM ^
We are 27 because our acceptance rate is 50%.
August 20th, 2009 at 3:28 PM ^
Acceptance rate is a terrible measure to use, too - because they do it wrong. Michigan doesn't accept 50% of eligible candidates (read: those with a high school diploma or equivalent). It accepts 50% of applicants. Absolutely misleading.
clarification: nothing against you jrt336, just the system

No, it's not the acceptance rate, but it's tied to the acceptance rate:
The SAT/ACT score of incoming freshman is low compared to comparably ranked unversities.

The biggest factor is our "Alumni Giving Rate," which never cracks the top 100. If you look at the academic rating they give us, it's about 15th overall or so.

Here is the data from the Michigan class of 2012 (freshmen starting fall of 2008):
29,105 Applications
11,953 Admissions
5,710 Enrolled
http://www.admissions.umich.edu/about/
Office of Admissions has its reasoning for accepting almost 12,000 students. They expect attrition mainly from out-of-staters who decide to go Ivy or the in-state students that decide to go to MSU or a lower level school within the state of Michigan for financial reasons or God forbid, academic reasons.

FWIW....I have UM Ranked #1
However, I am biased.
